Protesters in over 400 cities march vs Monsanto

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Organizers say two million people marched in protest against seed giant Monsanto in hundreds of rallies across the U.S. and in over 50 other countries on Saturday.

"March Against Monsanto" protesters say they wanted to call attention to the dangers posed by genetically modified food and the food giants that produce it. Founder and organizer Tami Canal said protests were held in 436 cities in 52 countries.

Genetically modified plants are grown from seeds that are engineered to resist insecticides and herbicides, add nutritional benefits or otherwise improve crop yields and increase the global food supply. Most corn, soybean and cotton crops grown in the United States today have been genetically modified. But some say genetically modified organisms can lead to serious health conditions and harm the environment. The use of GMOs has been a growing issue of contention in recent years, with health advocates pushing for mandatory labeling of genetically modified products even though the federal government and many scientists say the technology is safe.

The 'March Against Monsanto' movement began just a few months ago, when Canal created a Facebook page on Feb. 28 calling for a rally against the company's practices.

Checking out your local media coverage is very, very interesting. I was in Brussels myself, we were about a thousand, and not one of our media had pictures or video of the event. Same for my usual EU newspapers I visit online - nothing in the Netherlands (4000 in Amsterdam), nothing in Frankfurter or Sueddeutsche, nothing (!) on the Guardian. It would seem Monsanto owns not just the politicians.

And then, RT has both this and this...

On edit: So I'm reading on the Vancouver, Canada protest on FB, and someone says "for those wondering about the lack of coverage, check out http://www.realfarmacy.com/fox-reporters-fired-for-reporting-the-truth-about-monsantos-milk/. Jaw-dropping.

The farmer population needs massive canvassing in order to try to convince them that they're the only thing standing between America and a poisoned food supply, and that they need to give up expedience of profit for proper stewardship of the nation's food. Did you see the article about the bee hives being destroyed by Illinois 'authorities,' queen bees killed and all?

As for the people I met, I couldn't believe I was being asked "What's Monsanto?" It's like being asked, "Who's Obama"!

There are many reasons why to many this is not a priority in their lives.
Yes the bees
IL beekepers going underground now with people who drink milk from a cow
I read a comment in the last week before the march today
From Mr Martin

I hope people put big brand products boxes on their signs... put the brands that use monsanto.. like Kelloggs... Nabisco... etc. Its the tipping point... once those brands realize that people are connecting them to Monsanto they will dump monsanto.. its the tipping point.. Wal-Mart did it with the growth hormone rbst in milk... they dumped all suppliers doing it and then all the other grocery stores started to dump them too. Tip IT! Lets get brands on the news in a negative light! That is how you go after Monsanto! Monsanto won't stop.. they murder people... going back to Agent Orange.. that is their business.. kill people.

He is right about the rbst
when big food companies stop buying the gmo goods we all win

are awake about the corporate state whilst the center / rest is still dormant.
They may focus on different parts of the overall issue, but it starts with recognizing representative democracy isn't working properly for the majority.

I think it's time to move past leftwing/rightwing, to be honest. We're all human first, that kind of hippie shit

When it comes to something this serious we all should be on the same side.
Truly inspiring to see them all and welcome them all

Daughter & I went, not sure about the numbers of people who turned out. All were informed & commited to this. faux news did a bit & stated about 500 showed up to march, with a bit of little film footage. Channel 9 was there but I haven't seen any film yet. A friend of mine on f/b said he thought it was more like a thousand. The police were there to direct traffic & it was a well thought out & planned event. Peaceful.

Surveys for US show most asked do want labelling for GMOs at least
I do think that is to avoid them not just to be aware

After today I had to go check seeing the R Paulers and also libertarians marching

So this from a r paul forum ( no fan here--just curious on how they reason this):

Remember in a free society where liberty is protected, you are not allowed to disturb the liberty of others. If we have farms right next to each other and your GMO crops can somehow affect mine, then the purpose of the government would be to tell you that you are intruding on my liberty (my private property in this case) and you will probably either have to stop or find a way to grow GMOs without affecting my crops. Same thing as I cannot dump toxic waste into a stream that runs by your property and it ends up contaminating your land.

The thing about Food and GMO's is that the food industry/politicians is bought out by major corporations. Ron Paul is for limited government and against the big agencies like FDA, DOE, CIA, IRS, etc...

Ron Paul is also for free market to govern the issues, this means more power in the hands of the people. The absence of these large, ominous agencies will force (in a way) the people to govern their own issues thus creating a safer environment for food, force food companies to label foods properly. This could very well phase out GMO, Trans-fats, growth hormones, synthetic food,etc...

Sad thing is that the board of directors for these agencies are usually big corporation execs and they just play by their own rules.

And this editorial for libertarians
http://www.examiner.com/article/frankenfood-or-globe-saving-grub-what-s-a-libertarian-to-believe

So both of those above is where some of 'em are coming from .

some 80 times and the anchors would not air it. Monsanto has deep hooks.

I hope everyone knows that Hillary Clinton once worked at the Rose law firm which has represented Monsanto; I am as yet unaware if she was personally involved in any of those cases but I'd really like to know.

Thank you for marching!

May 2013

At Kraft's shareholder meeting on May 22nd, 2013 in Rosémont,Il shareholders were ADVISED to vote AGAINST a shareholder proposal to LABEL GENETICALLY ENGINEERED PRODUCTS!

In Europe Kraft labels ALL it's products, because it's the law.

Europe has been labeling GMO's since 1997!
Foods whole or part with GMO's MUST be labeled. Flavors and additives MUST be labeled.

These U.S. companies have been labeling since 1997!
Kellogg. Coke. Pepsi. Campbell's. Kraft. Heinz. Cadbury/Schwepps

Mars. Jacobs. McDonald's

In 1996-1997 Monsanto in the U.K.told the people to HAVE LABELING! How times have changed.
