St. Louis priest comes out as gay
Source: KC Star/AP
ST. LOUIS A Roman Catholic priest in St. Louis has written a book about his life as a homosexual priest.
The Rev. Gary Meier took a leave of absence last year as pastor at Saints Teresa and Bridget Church in St. Louis. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Meier's book, "Hidden Voices: Reflections of a Gay, Catholic Priest," was published anonymously in 2011. But Meier republished it this month under his name.
The Rev. James Martin, editor-at-large at America magazine, says there are only two or three priests in the U.S. who have said publicly they're gay.
St. Louis Archbishop Robert Carlson says Meier has an opportunity to be an example to others who struggle with the same feelings.
Meier says he'd like to remain a priest but believes that's unlikely.

(26,727 posts)If "gay" means that he's attracted to men just as a hetero priest is attracted to women... but that he's never acted on it... then I can't see why he would have a problem (unless he takes a position directly opposing a church teaching).
But if it's his memoirs of multiple past partners... he would be gone pretty quickly (as would a straight priest).

(5,756 posts)Even if the priest is obeying the vow of celibacy there will still be many parishioners who don't want to have an admitted gay priest. Not to mention the vast majority of sex scandals in the church are from priests preying on males and not females. So there would likely, always be the suspicion that a gay priest will be preying on young males because that's what's been driven into our minds through the media and current cultural attitudes.
If you haven't watched the movie Priest from 1994 you should see it (available on Netflix). I think it summed up the environment for gay priests rather nicely back then and the situation has only marginally changed since it was made.
Happily, other churches have become a lot more open. I have one co-worker friend whose Lutheran church has a gay minister with a partner. For one of their annual fund-raising events they put on a musical that's a satire of some popular musical. Yep, really. It's great fun.

(5,165 posts)He could remain a priest who serves in a non-public manner, for example, at a retirement center for priests or for the elderly.
His current age could also play a part. If he's young perhaps he's better off laicized; if older - too old to adapt to another life, he could be accommodated in some way.
I don't know enough about this case to comment knowledgeably.

That said, he would still be considered a priest until he is laicized.
