Rick Perry Jabs Wendy Davis For Being A Teen Mom: Too Bad 'She Hasn't Learned From Her Own Example'

Source: Huffington Post

While many have called Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis (D) a hero for standing on her feet for 11 hours to filibuster an anti-abortion bill, Gov. Rick Perry (R) couldn't resist taking a jab at her for having been a teenage mother.

"Even the woman who filibustered the Senate the other day was born into difficult circumstances. She was the daughter of a single woman, she was a teenage mother herself. She managed to eventually graduate from Harvard Law School and serve in the Texas senate," Perry said Thursday in a speech to the National Right to Life Convention. "It is just unfortunate that she hasn’t learned from her own example that every life must be given a chance to realize its full potential and that every life matters."

Davis was raised by a single mother, and she became a single mother herself at 19. She went on to graduate from Harvard Law School and was elected to the Texas state Senate in 2008.

On Tuesday, Davis captured the attention of the world when she stood on her feet for 11 hours without a bathroom break and filibustered S.B. 5, a bill that opponents say would dramatically reduce access to abortion in the state. Republicans shut down Davis' filibuster about an hour and half before the midnight end to the legislature's special session on Tuesday, alleging that she broke the rules by speaking off-topic about a mandatory ultrasound bill. But Democrats were able to stall the vote by quabbling with Lieutenant Gov. David Dewhurst (R) about procedural issues, and the crowd of protesters in the state capitol drowned out the final vote by shouting at the top of their lungs.

Update 12:06 p.m.:

State Senator Wendy Davis released the following response on Perry's remarks:

Rick Perry's statement is without dignity and tarnishes the high office he holds. They are small words that reflect a dark and negative point of view.

Our governor should reflect our Texas values. Sadly, Gov. Perry fails that test.

Pro-Choice. People like him think it means "pro-abortion" and thus he calls her a hypocrite. He and his ilk refuse to accept that it's about choice, as in at least two possible outcomes, and abortion being only one possible outcome.

Until they accept that definition, they'll keep making asses of themselves in poor attempts of hypocrite-finger-pointing.

Perry missed the point (he could have learned a lot during the filibuster) that when you have laws like this, women will be left with far less safe alternatives resulting in more abortions, and worse yet- unsafe abortions.

I know a lot of you have waited patiently, so you’ll be glad to know that Glen Maxey’s book about Rick Perry is out and you can buy it on paper.

Your favorite hairdresser/unblogger/eyeliner maven wrote the Glen Maxey cover story for the current edition of OutSmart, which is kinda odd considering that I am neither. You can read about it here. Or, better yet, click here to see how it looks in real life.

The cover looks adorable and you’ll be happy to know that Glen went out and bought a Brokeback Mountain jacket just for the photoshoot. After all, if Rick Perry did his anti-gay ad wearing one, the least Glen could do is remind people that Rick Perry likes to dress like a gay cowboy.

First up, an exhaustive post on Gawker, All Your Rick Perry Gay Sex Rumors Collected in one Handy Book:

According to Maxey-who, while obviously a partisan, is as far as I can tell not a crank and served 12 years in the state legislature-he located two men who claimed to have had sex with Perry. One was a male prostitute who told associates that Perry had hired him three or four times a year for hotel parties with Perry and an aide. The other was a man who responded to a Craigslist ad allegedly posted by Perry. Along the way, there are dozens of other more tenuous second-hand reports, including one man linked to Perry who pointedly refused to deny the accusations.

That story is a GREAT read, and the comments are even better. Gawker really digs in to the book, and it's fair to say that their regular reader community is tailor-made for these kinds of exposes. The Gawker story had sufficient comments and page views that their post might help give this story legs into the national media.

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund and a native Texan whose mother, Ann Richards, served as governor, responded in a statement to HuffPost.

“Rick Perry’s remarks are incredibly condescending and insulting to women," Richards said. "This is exactly why the vast majority of Texans believe that politicians shouldn’t be involved in a woman’s personal health care decisions. Women are perfectly capable of deciding whether to choose adoption, end a pregnancy, or raise a child, and they don’t need Rick Perry’s help making that decision. What the world saw in Texas this week was democracy in action. The people had a voice this week, and we’ll make sure they have a voice in the weeks ahead."

http://www.gallup.com/poll/161153/texas-uninsured-rate-moves-further-away-states.aspx

For the fifth straight year, Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the country -- the 28.8% of adult Texans lacking healthcare coverage in 2012 is the highest for any state since Gallup and Healthways started tracking insurance coverage in January 2008. This widens the gap between Texas and the state with the second-highest uninsured rate in the country, Louisiana (24.0%), to 4.8 percentage points -- the largest number separating these two spots on record. Massachusetts continues to have the lowest uninsured rate in the U.S., at 4.5%.

Way to focus on women's health there, buckeroo.
