Zimmerman Juror Decides Not To Write Book About Trial
Source: Buzzfeed
Intense and immediate backlash apparently changed the mind of Juror B37 and her agent. I have realized that the best direction for me to go is away from writing any sort of book and return instead to my life as it was before
Late Monday night, Sharlene Martin of Martin Literary Management LLC told BuzzFeed that Juror B37 will no longer pursue a book deal.
The jurors statement, via Martin:
I realize it was necessary for our jury to be sequestered in order to protest our verdict from unfair outside influence, but that isolation shielded me from the depth of pain that exists among the general public over every aspect of this case. The potential book was always intended to be a respectful observation of the trial from my and my husbands perspectives solely and it was to be an observation that our system of justice can get so complicated that it creates a conflict with our spirit of justice.
Now that I am returned to my family and to society in general, I have realized that the best direction for me to go is away from writing any sort of book and return instead to my life as it was before I was called to sit on this jury.
The jurors announcement came after Martin who has also represented Amanda Knoxs ex Raffaele Sollecito decided to drop her.
After careful consideration regarding the proposed book project with Zimmerman Juror B37, I have decided to rescind my offer of representation in the exploration of a book based upon this case, Martin said at the time.
Earlier Monday, when the partnership was first announced, Martin said she hoped Juror B37s book would help the public understand the commitment it takes to serve and be sequestered on a jury in a highly publicized murder trial
. It could open a whole new dialogue about laws that may need to be revised and revamped to suit a 21st century way of life.
But on Monday evening, Juror B37 went on CNN to defend the jurys decision to find George Zimmerman not guilty.

(12,778 posts)From the part of the interview that I saw, it probably sunk her. It was a very bad idea for her to do that interview so soon, especially since she was obviously not very well prepared.

Though I can't imagine why she would be concerned. She has our justice system to rely on.

(17,577 posts)What perspective, exactly, did the husband have that would have been different from most other Americans?
Sounds like, to me, that she needs a little independence from her husband. I realize he is an attorney, but his involvement didn't need to be as an author.
Just my opinion as I form further opinion about this juror.

(86 posts)I was channeling through stations yesterday afternoon and came across Al Sharpton - not on his program - talking about this juror. Besides the fact that it was awfully quick for her to get a book deal since no one knew who they were, it seems her husband is an attorney and he is known to one or both of the defense attorneys. There appear to also be other questions regarding how this jury was chosen. I came in to his discussion after is began and may not have all the info, but questions are being raised.
Sharpton suggested that an investigation into all this may be requested in light of what is being learned about her, her husband and his connections and the jury selection in general. This is my understanding of what was said.

(1,924 posts)I was troubled when I learned she already had a book deal. This whole situation just seems really sheisty. I would hate to think she did anything unscrupulous as a juror (considering her husband is an attorney), but I just don't know what to think about this lady. And I wonder when the book deal was made: before, during or after the trial. If after, they sure went fast from no deal to finalizing a deal to canceling the deal. It doesn't pass the smell test.

(3,248 posts)Yeah--sounds like her attorney husband had this plan from the start. Don't know if he could have influenced her original call for jury duty, but once she was called he may have coached her on how to make sure she didn't get tossed so he could work behind the scenes to set up this deal.

(37,535 posts)I've had two lawyers help me with my mother. They're in the much larger Phx metro area.
Both knew my mother's court-appointed lawyer. Not friends, not well, but at some point in the last 15-20 years each had to deal with him on some matter.
It's like Slavists. I know a bunch. Europe and Russia, Taiwan and Korea. Lots in various states and even a couple in Canada. Not very well. And mostly by name. But it's a very, very small world if you're a Slavist. My advisor was world famous. Again, in a very, very small world.
So this may have been a close relationship. But it's probably a professional relationship blown out of proportion by suspicion and seeking every way possible to win.
