'Glee' star Cory Monteith died of heroin and alcohol mix, coroner says
Source: NBC News
"Glee" star Cory Monteith died of mixed drug toxicity involving heroin and alcohol, according to the British Columbia Coroner's Service.
His death is believed to be accidental, according to the findings released Tuesday.
Monteith, 31, was found dead Saturday afternoon in a hotel room in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he had spent a week. Vancouver police have not disclosed if Monteith was in his native Canada for personal or business reasons. When Monteith failed to check out on time, hotel staff went to his room and found that the actor had passed away. Police ruled out foul play from the beginning.
Monteith was due to begin working on the fifth season of the Fox show in two weeks.

(6,335 posts)Coincidentally I saw "Jim Morrison's Last 24 Hours" on Current TV just a few hours ago. His girlfriend had him try heroin and he had been heavily drinking (as usual). He died in the bathtub at 5 am.
I also saw the Current documentary about heroin a couple weeks ago. Apparently a lot of people get hooked using Oxycontin pain killer. Then they find out that heroin does the same thing only stronger and cheaper. Very sad addiction. Most get clean a few times before they relapse and die from it. Stay the hell away from Oxycontin.

(13,688 posts)being the parent of any child of color wondering if your precious child is next. Or try being poor in America. Or try getting cancer without having any health insurance or not enough insurance. I am not going to fawn over some privileged rich white kid who had everything going for him. Yes it's regrettable when anyone dies of an overdose, but pain? He didn't know squat about pain compared to the millions of Americans who know real pain. And most of them don't overdose either.

(2,491 posts)Crass, yet you were making a valid point. Then you got racial.
Why does it matter that he was "white"? It may be less sad because he was given every chance to make a great life, but I don't see how it would be any different based on skin color. Sheesh.
What is going on around here? I have seen more misogyny and racism/prejudice/stereotyping just browsing a few times in the last couple days than I had in almost 10 years.
The worse part is it almost seems as if it is acceptable.

(13,688 posts)people tend to benefit from white privilege and probably as a whole suffer less pain than downtrodden minority groups do. Yes I know he is Canadian and perhaps it's different up there.

(2,491 posts)But that is why broad-brushing is never a good idea. A white kid living in a trailer park where is parents won't send him to school because his clothes smell like ammonia from all the meth cooking and usage would not think he had some automatic leg up on a AA kid being born in the projects.
Poverty sadly seems to be the great equalizer.

(3,623 posts)I've read that he started using drugs at the age of 13. He realized how serious his addiction was and made valiant attempts to get clean. It often takes many, many attempts before a person can finally be free of any addiction. Unfortunately, some succumb before they manage the final successful attempt. I'm sure he rests in peace.

(24,728 posts)And honestly, I think that part of the thrill of the drugs isn't the physical feeling, but rather the emotional feeling of being closer to "the edge." Glad I never yet fell off myself...

It was not being under all of that scrutiny which allowed him to kill himself because he was perfectly free to do it.
