GOP rep on Zimmerman verdict: 'Get over it'

Source: USA Today

A Republican congressman from Maryland has this message for people fixating over the verdict in George Zimmerman's trial: "Get over it."

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, was acquitted Saturday in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, a Florida teenager. Trayvon's death and Zimmerman's trial have been at the center of a national debate over racial profiling.

"We're hung up on this one case, where this one fellow was, in fact, found not guilty by a jury. That's the way the American law system works. Get over it, " Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., said Tuesday on WMAL radio.

Harris, a conservative who was first elected in 2010, also suggested there has been too much news media coverage -- especially on TV -- about the trial and its aftermath. "We missed the forest through the trees to a large extent with all the huge issues going on in the world," Harris said.

Transcript, courtesy BaltimoreSun.com:

WMAL: Have you been watching -- I know its way off topic -- but have you been watching, as everyone has, the Zimmerman case?

HARRIS: You know, I haven't been watching day by day but it honestly you can't turn on any news program now without 90% of it taken up by the Zimmerman case. Again, you know we missed the forest for the trees to a large extent with all the huge issues going on in the world with unrest in the Middle East, we're hung up on this one case where this one fellow was in fact found not guilty by a jury. That's the way the American law system works. Get over it.

YOU get over it, asshole!

Next time you and yours start whining about how you want "your" America "back," because you don't like how gays can marry whom they love,
you don't like how women supposedly still have the final jurisdiction over their own bodies (granted you and yours are working mighty hard to change that one!),
you don't like it that some people don't agree that you're entitled to have as many fucking guns as you feel like,
you don't like it that voting rights are still in many places as broad as they are,
you don't like people whose skin-color isn't like yours and you've already decided they're probably nogoodniks (just like your little pal "Georgie" did),
you don't like it that there's a black guy in the Oval Office and he isn't the janitor.

YOU get over it.

You can stop putting up with it as soon as WE, the aggrieved, decide it's over.

What's scary is he is just the tip of the iceberg. He represents a bunch of people who all voted for him.

It often feels hopeless.

People aren't upset just for Trayvon, they're upset that the crazy SYG law and racism resulted in an innocent child's death, and his murderer was not punished...and that it could and will happen again. That's why we can't get over it. This wasn't just an aberrational hiccup in our legal system. The system worked exactly as it was designed. And that's a problem we can't "get over."

I guess he thinks you have to respect the decisions of some courts, but not others.

On gay marriage, Mr. Harris, the court has spoken. Get over it.

What's up with all the rage and hate here? I too am annoyed at this governmental representative telling americans to "get over it", but I don't feel the need to be so hostile. A lot of you are giving off straight up vigilante vibes here. If you feel that strongly about this issue you can contact rep Harris here:

This was one of the first threads I've read/responded to, and I was seriously taken aback by the responses. I guess it's just a contraversial issue that gets people upset. Interesting that you label me enemy and try to insult me for having an opinion though. Oh and you're quite "charming" yourself.

I was referring to Andy Harris. You know, the republican congressman mentioned in the OP? The one who says everyone should just "get over" the Zimmerman verdict. I didn't say anything to you.

Oh, and, uh, welcome to DU.
