A US ambassador nominee to the United Nations has called the UN Security Council's response to Syria's civil war a "disgrace" at her confirmation hearing.

Samantha Power, who was President Barack Obama's nominee for the position made the statement before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday.

We see the failure of the UN Security Council to respond to the slaughter in Syria - a disgrace that history will judge harshly

Samantha Power, US UN ambassador nominee

"We see the failure of the UN Security Council to respond to the slaughter in Syria - a disgrace that history will judge harshly," Power said in testimony that also praised the New York-based world body.

Under questioning from senators, she called Syria one of the worst "cases of mass brutality" that she has ever seen.

As long as Pooty-Poot sticks by Assad come Hell or high water (most likely the former), the UN will do precisely squat.

a person's background and where they came from. So she graduated from an Atlanta high school and was backed by Senator Chambliss and the Corner. I don't have too much respect for their decisions.

She is also Pro Israel no matter what? So the President made her the Ambassador? Why don't he give me her job? I would advise him to do an about face. America doesn't hold her views. She needs to go back to Atlanta and join the republican party of Chambliss. There are other bright young people from the Left need jobs. I just think I can do a better job than her and give the President better advice. She will have the president in every War on the Planet.

to tell me to go away? This is the United States, not the Middle East. I'm also a card carrying member of the Democratic Party. I disagree with his Middle East Policy and hiring all these neocons as advisors. Her idea of Genocide prevention is more Wars. Is that her idea of intervention? I give my Democratic representative in Congress the power to veto it. You can't do anything about it either.

Even though I voted for President Obama, I don't agree with him on every issue, and the Middle East happens to be one. I think that I have made that perfectly clear. And I'm not the only person in his Party that disagree, I assure you. This is a real Democracy and not the Middle East. You don't comprehend that.

It's a person who goes online just to stir up trouble, but isn't there to communicate or contribute in a meaningful way.

Lots of non-trolls stir up trouble. But a troll's purpose is just to make trouble and cause arguments, disagreements.

"Disrupter."

Trolls in the stories I read always lived under bridges, were strong and stupid and ugly, and never did anything good. They just bothered people going about their business.

In cases of genocide and massive civilian massacres I believe the UN/US have a moral obligation to intervene to some extent. IMO we should have started to assist with a no fly zone as soon as Assad started executing children in the streets. Assistance with communication, organization, strategic assistance and small arms would have been immensely helpful. We dropped the ball on this one.

Below is a discussion of the pro intervention argument from 2 years ago.

disagree with this woman and you. That is because I'm an American and know this woman has an agenda. Especially when I see where she is from and who got her where she is in Government. She is from Georgia and Saxby Chambliss offered her to the Administration. She is also backed by another republican from a Southern state. Those people don't even care about human rights in their own dam country much less the Middle East. Our Foreign Policies have been influenced by these people too long.

You can't even tell the difference now between the Democratic Party and the Republican party on foreign Policy. They are both dominated now by neocon Republicans, that believe the solution to everything now is War.

One thing that exposes this woman from Georgia, is her typical line of supporting Israel no matter what. That is what drives her's and the U.S. agenda. As long as it benefits Israel you are right. To say Israel has a right to self defense and Syria or Iran does not is hypocrasy and racist. That is exactly the part of the country and cultural she was raised in and who her main backers are.

I'm old enough to know when Israel supported Apartheid South Africa and those same people who supported her bought resolutions in our Congress, labeling the ANC, a terrorist organization. Nelson Mandela was considered a terrorist by them. And guess which two countrie were allowed to obtain nuclear weapons to support their regimes over the natives.

What does this woman say about Israel's nuclear weapons and ethnic cleansing in Palestinian territorries. That is the advantage I have of being a natural born American citizen, whose ancestors fought and helped build this country. We know the bad among us. We know where that strategy came from. Look no further than the conquest of the New World and the American West. Netanyahu is just doing a repeat performance of Western and American history. It is called conquer and divide by identifying the divisions among the native indigenous peoples.

That weakness, is religious extremism. The people of the Middle East need to solve their religious differences, or they will find the land and resources control by people who think they are a better race. That is what drives their agendas. The only country ever dropped a nuclear weapon on any country was the United States. The only reason our government did it, is because we were the only country had the technology at the time. The Indians use to call it speaking with a fork tongue. She speaks with a fork tongue.

Watching Clinton, Power and Rice at work has forever disabused me of that half-assed notion.

She's more a physician. Of sorts.

"My prescription," she said, "would be that the level of American and international engagement would ratchet up commensurate with the abuse on the ground."

She got Obama "engaged" in Libya, and won't be content until he's engaged even more in Syria.
