Congressional Black Caucus recommends Sheila Jackson Lee for Homeland Security Secretary
Source: Houston Chronicle
Conservative bloggers went wild Monday when they got wind of the Congressional Black Caucus suggestion that President Obama pick Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston for the post of Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
Rich Cooper, avid blogger for Security Debrief, responded to the news of the Jackson Lee recommendation in a post by saying, Apparently, it is not a joke. For reasons that baffle any sense of reality, it is a serious gesture on the part of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) to encourage President Obama to nominate Rep. Jackson Lee as a replacement for outgoing-DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano.
A letter dated July 25 and signed by CBC Chairwoman Rep. Marcia Fudge, an Ohio Democrat, urges President Barack Obama to consider Jackson Lee for the position formerly held by Janet Napolitano, the first woman to hold the position. Napolitano resigned earlier this month to become president of the University of California.
Representative Jackson Lee would serve as an effective DHS Secretary because she understands the importance of increasing border security and maintaining homeland security, the nomination letter reads.

(23,664 posts)Appointing Napolitano as DHS sec was one of Obama's inexpicably awful moves. She accomplished jack shit in the job and it opened the door for the seriously creepy AZ secretary of state to appoint herself to the governorship (can't recall her name at the moment).
I hope they don't do this. If they want to appoint a congresscritter, appoint Eric Cantor. He can cause less damage at DHS than he can in congress.
William Bratton would be a much better choice....I don't think he's too busy these days. We need as many powerful voices as possible on the partisan side of governance.

(3,180 posts)By all accounts, Rep Jackson Lee doesn't have the necessary and desirable background to fill this position. I was actually a little taken aback when Secretary Napolitano was nominated. She had little if any security background or intel experience. And to be quite frank, some of that showed during her tenure.

(45,274 posts)a) I have no real idea of her qualifications,
and
b) My comment was about the Far Righteous being able to accept Condi, but maybe having a little difficulty with any other black females, particularly those who don't come across quite as "White Establishment" as Rice.

(4,775 posts)I have long admired Sheila Jackson Lee, she's a tough fighter for our side. I don't know if DHS is a good fit for her. I think it would only work out if she was allowed to seriously overhaul our approach to "homeland security". If not, she could serve better in some other capacity. But your point is dead on, she's just not the type that Obama looks for when making such appointments. He's more likely to appoint Condi.
