An escaped convict broke into the home of a southwest Iowa couple and held them at gunpoint for several hours before one of the hostages shot and killed the intruder, police said Tuesday.

Rodney Eugene Long, 38, broke out of the Clarinda Correctional Facility about 20 miles away on Friday. He is accused of shooting Taylor County deputy Sunday night after stealing a gun in a home burglary and led police on a 40-minute chase, triggering a massive manhunt Monday in the area.

and himself.

The Mauderlys had a shotgun in the house and eventually decided to retrieve it, Mortvedt said. Jerome Mauderly, 71, shot and killed Long in the couple's kitchen.

Let's hear from the take-away-guns-from-everyone advocates.

Let's hear from the guns-should-not-be-owned-for-self-defense-in-the-homes advocates.

Let's hear it from those who want to revive the 1993 AWB and expect different results in the next election. Let's hear it from those who want to disregard Bill Clinton's analysis:

In his book "My Life," in which he analyzed the loss of Congress to the Republicans in 1994, he wrote:
"Just before the House vote (on the crime bill), Speaker Tom Foley and majority leader Dick Gephardt had made a last-ditch appeal to me to remove the assault weapons ban from the bill. They argued that many Democrats who represented closely divided districts had already...defied the NRA once on the Brady bill vote. They said that if we made them walk the plank again on the assault weapons ban, the overall bill might not pass, and that if it did, many Democrats who voted for it would not survive the election in November. Jack Brooks, the House Judiciary Committee chairman from Texas, told me the same thing...Jack was convinced that if we didn't drop the ban, the NRA would beat a lot of Democrats by terrifying gun owners....Foley, Gephardt, and Brooks were right and I was wrong. The price...would be heavy casualties among its defenders." (Pages 611-612)

"On November 8, we got the living daylights beat out of us, losing eight Senate races and fifty-four House seats, the largest defeat for our party since 1946....The NRA had a great night. They beat both Speaker Tom Foley and Jack Brooks, two of the ablest members of Congress, who had warned me this would happen. Foley was the first Speaker to be defeated in more than a century. Jack Brooks had supported the NRA for years and had led the fight against the assault weapons ban in the House, but as chairman of the Judiciary Committee he had voted for the overall crime bill even after the ban was put into it. The NRA was an unforgiving master: one strike and you're out. The gun lobby claimed to have defeated nineteen of the twenty-four members on its hit list. They did at least that much damage...." No it hasn't. The authoritarian gun controller/banner has changed little over the last 10, 20, 30 and more years. Same call for bans. Same call for more restrictions. Same culture war attacks. Same castigation of millions of Americans.

Yet these "activists" expect different results from the Same behavior. No Einsteins in that lot where nothing changes.

jumped all over this story, but it's strange that no mention is made of how an escaped convict so easily obtained a gun in a home burglary. Most sane Americans are asking the same question, and until it's answered the senseless killing and maiming of innocent Americans will continue to become more common.

I'm glad that this particular story had a safe outcome for the victims, but the Gungeoneers only seem to see the "gunz are good" side of the picture. News flash: fewer and more tightly controlled guns would lead to fewer incidents where guns are necessary for self protection. Allowing the NRA and the gun manufacturers to flood the country with the unfettered proliferation of lethal weapons with little oversight and lax regulations is causing what amounts to an arms race with the criminals.

Most reasonable American gun owners agree with the need for tighter control and required responsibility for the purchase and storing of lethal weapons. Something as simple as a gun safe may have prevented this criminal from preying on an innocent couple.

9. I give it 2 1/2 out of 4- not bad. You got *most* of the talking points

Aug 2013

+6 for the use of 'sane', 'innocent', 'unfettered', 'lethal' (X2), 'reasonable', and 'Gungeoneers' (X2)

-4 for failing to use 'commonsense', 'slaughter', 'blood', and 'gun safety'

The use of "may" in the last sentence comes across as a little weaselly, IMO.

All in all, not bad and better than most anti-gun OPs. Don't forget to

so you'll be better ready the next time you face an audience that doesn't already agree with you.

Butcher knife or baseball bat or handgun, he was a menace and a threat and desperate evil man who got what he deserved.

Note that the bad guy broke into the house BEFORE getting the handgun.

You might want to blame the gun, but he was preying on them before he got the gun.

By the way, when I got off the Mokulele flight on Molokai guess what I saw? A couple there with rifle cases waiting for their plane, they must have been there for a boar hunt.

I had a wonderful time, they want me to come back. I have two appointments on Oahu in November and might make it over to Molokai.

I forgot which island you call home but if it's Oahu let me know if you want to get together.

Aloha!
