Syria asks UN to immediately investigate three new ‘chemical attacks’ by rebels.

The Syrian government is demanding that the United Nations immediately investigate three alleged chemical attacks carried out by rebel groups on the outskirts of Damascus last week, Syria’s envoy to the UN said. Ambassador Bashar Jaafari said he had requested UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that the team of experts currently in Damascus investigating an alleged use of chemical weapons last week also investigate these other attacks.

The attacks took place on August 22, 24 and 25 in Jobar, Sahnaya, and al-Bahariya, Bashar Jaafari told journalists Wednesday. The “militants” used toxic chemical gas against the Syrian army, the diplomat said. "We are asking UN to incorporate 3 more locations where the Syrian soldiers inhaled the nerve gas also in the suburbs of Damascus. So the spectrum of investigation is increasing compared to the initial phase of investigation," Jaafari said.

Jaafari spoke shortly after an informal meeting of the UN Security Council, where its five permanent members discussed the UK’s proposed draft resolution. The text blames Assad’s government for an alleged chemical attack on August 21, and demands a swift response.

“There is no consensus in the Council on any draft of the resolution, whether it is British or French or American... because members of the Council do not believe the authenticity of the accusations provided by this delegation or that delegation,” the Syrian diplomat said. Jaafari also accused the US, UK and France of being “part of the problem,” rather than “a solution to the crisis.” These Western states are providing “armed terrorists groups” in Syria with weapons and all kinds of logistical support, he stated.

Thank heavens the swift and terrible application of military force can solve all uncertainties and problems with proof. What does it even matter who is really at fault? We have the most bombs, missiles and warplanes, so we are certain to win . . . or something, right?

Today I doubt if it is even one in four. Perhaps this disaster is not really inevitable after all.

Tomorrow may be the deciding day.

As to "another source":

This is recorded text from an official news conference held at the United Nations building in New York (note the big picture in the middle of the article). If you want to read the same text from a different source, look it up yourself.

They are all probably lying. Do you really think our country needs to wade in and sort it all out? At the price of how much blood and treasure do we learn once again the limits of our power?

Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations, Bashar Jaafari, added a new level of complexity to the issue, announcing that he had submitted evidence of the three new instances of chemical weapons use in Syria, which he asserted had been carried out by armed terrorist groups, the government’s blanket term for Syrian opposition forces.

Syria Envoy Alleges Rebel Gas Attack, Demands U.N. Investigate

Source: REUTERS

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – Syria’s U.N. envoy asked the United Nations on Wednesday to order chemical experts in Damascus to investigate three rebel attacks in which he said Syrian troops “inhaled poisonous gas,” while Britain pushed for the Security Council to act on the crisis.

The United Nations has received at least 14 reports of possible chemical weapons use during Syria’s two-year civil war, and after months of diplomatic wrangling a team of experts, led by Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom, arrived in Syria on August 18.

The U.N. team led by Swedish scientist Ake Sellstrom was initially going to look into three of those incidents, but its priority became investigating an alleged gas attack in the rebel-held suburbs of Damascus last week, which activists say killed hundreds of civilians.

Syrian U.N. Ambassador Bashar Ja’afari said he has written to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to ask that Sellstrom’s team also “investigate three heinous incidents that took place in the countryside of Damascus on (August) 22nd, 24th and 25th where members of the Syrian army inhaled poisonous gas.”

And at the end of the day, we can't keep the war-economy stagnant, now can we? We can't let all our bombs get stale and useless, right?

They are experiencing much more resistance than they expected this time. There is still a pretty good chance this war can be stopped.

The White House is getting a great deal of negative input. That can have a very real effect. The voice of the people still has some power there.

(If you really care, send the President an e-mail. It only takes a few minutes.)
