Teacher's Bullying as 'Gay' Led to Suicide Try, Student Says

Source: Courthouse News Service

CHARLESTON, S.C. (CN) - A high school math teacher in South Carolina bullied a student so mercilessly as "gay" that the boy tried to kill himself, the teen and his mother claim in court.

John Doe and his mother sued the Charleston County School District in the Charleston County Court of Common Pleas.

The teacher, Alan Ingram, is not named as a defendant, though he is named throughout the complaint. Ingram was the boy's teacher at West Ashley High School in Charleston, the family says in the lawsuit.

"In early April 2013, Ingram began bullying plaintiff in class, in front of plaintiff's classmates, by telling plaintiff's classmates that plaintiff was 'gay,' and by calling plaintiff names and belittling him in the presence of his classmates. This continued on a daily basis for an extended period of time," the complaint states.

In urban and suburban areas if a teacher says good morning the wrong way, they're held accountable in the 21st CEntury How in the world did someone not step in and say, this is unacceptable. You cannot treat a student in this manner. Aside from slavery, I sometimes wish the South had been allowed to secede.

I find it odd when grown men and women try to gain the acceptance of little kids by acting like them. Very creepy.

WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) - The man accused of sex acts with a student at West Ashley High School while he was a teacher there has been charged with sexual battery.

According to Charleston County deputies, 27-year-old Eric Helms was charged after an investigation into a relationship he allegedly had with an 18-year-old student at the school.

The student told officials that the relationship was consenting, but Helms' position as an authority figure violates state law, officials said. Read the state law here.

The student and Helms began the relationship while the student was a teaching assistant in Helms' classroom. The affidavit states the pair had sex several times.

For one thing, those spam emails are automated and not personalized, and generally have no mechanism for replying.

People expressing outrage at his actions could deter his doing them in the future. He can write back to say he disagrees, and could block the senders if needed.

...and stuffing his mailbox with dog shit.

You were NOT calling for expressions of outrage. You were advocating a campaign of harassment.

And before some dickhead weighs in: I AM NOT DEFENDING THE POS. I am questioning the attacks directed against him.

Apart from anything else, it is very ,very unlikely that it's going to have any effect on this sort of bigot.

You're far more likely to achieve results by pointing out to his employers what sort of liability he represents.

society that this monster isn't in jail let alone still has a damn job. What is wrong with adults? It's not the kids, we just moved from GA to SC and in both of my son's high school there are openly gay kids & they didn't face ridicule from the kids.

The only grief they got if any would come from adults but always got squashed very quickly.

Fri Sep 6, 2013, 08:32 PM

are they afraid that if they do take action they might be held liable, or are they run by a bunch of pricks who were bullies in their own school years?

We have had so much of this in our school districts. Our son's school had a young gay man beaten by the football team that he had to be hospitalized. The f'n coach not only watched but participated. They called it roughhousing.

Over the past few years, we have seen a rash of attempted suicides by children. Not just gays either. It can start with a girl having too big a nose in someone's opinion. And the schools do almost nothing until they are sued.

No wonder they need more money for the district.

must park their personal political and religious views at the door if they serve in a public capacity. The line is probably more difficult to draw if the school is a religious school, etc. but if a public institution, there should be zero tolerance.

First of all the student may not be gay. But whether he is or not, he is entitled to be treated with respect because the purpose of education is to teach. While concepts of honesty, fairness and morality are not totally disconnected from one's educational journey, they cannot tread on issues that are highly controversial such as the morality or immorality of homosexuality.

As a gay man, I did not experience harassment from teachers. I was heckled a bit by classmates as a "fag" but that was long before I even knew what that meant. This was back in the early 70s.

I respect the decision of their attorney not to include the teacher in the suit but in my view he should be sued, not as revenge but to serve as a reminder to both him and others that such treatment is not acceptable.
