General Salmin Idriss, the leader of the Free Syria Army (FSA) , called Vladimir Putin a terrorist today after the Russian president said that allegations of a August 21 chemical weapons attack in the suburbs of Damascus was a provocation by Syrian rebels.
President Putin is lying, Gen. Idriss told Fox News. He knows exactly that the regime is killing our citizens
and is using Russian weapons and ammunition, tanks, [and] Scud missiles to destroy all the liberated areas. This man, President Putin, is a terrorist. And he is trying now to deceive the international community.
The actions of both men provide context to the controversial statements.
Russia has staunchly backed Assad in numerous ways during the 29-month conflict, and Putin has denied each reported chemical attack or blamed them on the rebels. Idriss has said that the FSAs top priority is getting weapons from the West as well as stopping the aerial bombardment but also stopping the importation of weapons and military personnel from Russia and Iran. "That is precisely what a U.S. strike could accomplish, which is one reason why Putin is working to prevent it".

That's all I can think of at the moment off the top of my head

(12,041 posts)The FSA has been accused of summarily executing numerous prisoners who it claims are government soldiers or shabiha, and people who it claims are informers. A rebel commander in Damascus said that over the months his unit had executed perhaps 150 people that the "military council" had found to be informers. He explained: "If a man is accused of being an informer, he is judged by the military council. Then he is either executed or released". Nadim Houry, a Middle East researcher for Human Rights Watch argued that "Intentionally killing anyone, even a shabiha, once he is outside of combat is a war crime, regardless of how horrible the person may have been". On 10 August 2012, a report indicated that Human Rights Watch was investigating rebel forces for such killings. The FSA, for its part, stated that they would put those fighters that had conducted the unlawful killings on trial.
Witnesses have also reported rebels conducting 'trial by grave' in which an alleged government soldier was given a mock trial next to a pre-made grave and executed on the spot by members of the FSA Amr bin al-Aas brigade. One rebel said: "We took him right to his grave and, after hearing the witnesses' statements, we shot him dead".
The Daoud Battalion, operating in the Jabal-al-Zawiya area, has reportedly used captured soldiers in proxy bombings. This involved tying the captured soldier into a car loaded with explosives and forcing him to drive to an Army checkpoint, where the explosives would be remotely-detonated.
The UN noted some credible allegations that rebel forces, including the FSA, were recruiting children as soldiers, despite stated FSA policy of not recruiting anyone under the age of 17. One rebel commander said that his 16-year-old son had died fighting government troops.

(3,093 posts)Following the death of his pro-Saudi/pro-Syrian father, Saad Hariri is the slick, spoiled scion of a new-money family built on Saudi money and patronage; after shooting his wad (and finding out that he shoots blanks) in the home country, he fled to exile and spends his time between Riyadh and Paris these days. Nonetheless, his physical absence from Lebanon doesn't mean that his bank account (or the Saudi princes that he serves) wields no influence there. Television stations, newspapers, and online "news" forums like YaLibnan, Al Mustaqbal (Future), The Daily Star, and other yellow rags are typically jointly owned by Saad and his Saudi patrons.
So, delrem's statement was entirely accurate (sans typo, which is otherwise immaterial in the present context). The fact that you didn't understand it does not warrant your attacks on yet another poster that you seem to follow around.

2ndly. I did not attack him, I questioned what he was posting. But, ironically you are personally attacking me out of the blue with false accusations. I'm not "following" or "attacking"anyone, but you are following and attacking me.
3rdly Forgot to thank you - due to focusing too much on the last paragraph - for the interesting background for those of us who aren't up to date with such things.

(90,061 posts)Assad at least has always had a clear picture of who was out to get him, and it is very interesting to contemplate how relations between Hezbollah, Iran, Iraq, and Syria have evolved since those days. You start to see that this whole Syrian debacle is an attempt to salvage/recover-from more than a decade of disastrously bad policy choices by the King and his servants.

(3,093 posts)Inmensely wealthy and powerful figures like the Sauds have presumably better ability to do so, but it is amazing how frequently "stomping" and "stammering" comprise the sum total of actual choices. Like now. Being accustomed to being immensely powerful, it takes quite a lot of stomping before this limitation is realized, and a lot more stammering before it is accepted.

(10,575 posts)JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And you report, as well, again in a replay of Afghanistan, that the CIA is not only training some of these rebels, but actually has put key figures of the Free Syrian Army on the payroll.
ADAM ENTOUS: Right. Its a very interesting development, which we learned of as part of the reporting, which is, you know, we areyou know, the United States is not at war with Syria, so this is obviously being done covertly with the CIA. The Saudis were instrumental in getting the CIA to agree to pay these salaries. And the idea is, if theseif these FSA commanders receive American money, the U.S. is building loyalty and building relationships that would last into the future. And thats the main rationale with these payments that are being made.
