House approves one-year 'Obamacare' delay in spending bill

WASHINGTON | Sun Sep 29, 2013 12:26am EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives on Sunday, ignoring a White House veto threat, approved a one-year delay in funding major provisions of President Barack Obama's landmark healthcare law as part of a government funding bill.

Republicans attached the amendment to a bill that is needed to keep federal agencies operating beyond September 30 when a new fiscal year begins.

The move brought the U.S. government closer to shutting down on Tuesday amid deep divisions between Republicans and Democrats.

But again, I don't care what anyone says, I blame US! Yes, that's right! I blame Democrats. We allowed them to get into power in 2010. This is our fault. Had we come out in enough numbers in 2010 we wouldn't be in this place. They control the state legislatures. State legislatures control the redistricting process. The redistricting process allowed them to redraw the district lines, helping them win more seats in the House even though the other part got more votes.

2010 could have been different if people had not stayed home and not voted in order to "teach the president" a lesson. The same crap is going on now with the right trying to divide the left in order to get the same scenario to play out in 2014. We can prevent another 2010 by getting out and voting and not playing into the right wings plans again. Not voting in 2014 should not be an opinion, it should be a priority if we want to get rid of these teapublican morons.

We Democrats must ban together now. The problem is that the people dividing us aren't necessarily doing it from the other party.

Here in the 1st District of NJ we have three of the eight votes that are blocking marriage equality from taking place. All three of them are Democrats, and the other Democrats on the ticket with them (except for Barbara Buono at the top) all support their obstruction.

What good would my voting for these "Democrats" do? It would reward them for their legislative gay-bashing, and ensure that marriage will continue to be denied me until the courts have their final say a couple of years from now. Worse, it would make them think they have a mandate for this sort of thing.

We have no hope if we keep electing Democrats who vote like Republicans. My energy would be wasted this year if I worked and campaigned for this lot; it would be better spent organizing progressives so we can oust "Democrats" like these at the next primary and take our party back.

because the Obama Administration (and Rahm Emanuel in particular) alienated the progressive base of the party by governing from the right. They pissed off the LGBT contingent, the anti-war contingent, the environmental contingent, and most of the other groups that helped them get elected. So those alienated groups defected or stayed home.

The LGBT vote shifted 15 percent from the Democrats to the Republicans in 2010. If Obama had pushed DADT and ENDA in his first year, we would not have lost the House in 2010.

So who's really to blame for where we are now?

I can see the blood oozing from the gaping hole of GOP's foot after they pulled the trigger.

The last shutdown didn't fare well for the GOP and this one will be even worse because the demographics have changed. Perhaps the wall streeters who are going to feel the pain will pull the plug on funding the GOP and the lack of cash will hurt.

The Senate Dems said they won't pass anything that isn't clean and this is definitely dirty.

The House also passed a separate clean funding bill to keep defense spending up and running. The Senate should block that as well because that's probably where most of the heat will originate towards the Republicans.

41. The House Just Voted To Increase The Size Of The Deficit By $106 Billion
Sun Sep 29, 2013, 04:21 AM
Sep 2013

Because this would cause many of the benefits to not be attained while the startup costs are being born too. The $106 billion is the CBO estimate of the decrease in the deficit for the full implementation of the Affordable Care Act over the next 10 years. The Senate bill sent back to the House would fund the government until November 15th so the House is attaching amendments that affect the entire fiscal year to a bill that expires 6 weeks from now? Now if we are seeing this kind of wrangling over 6 weeks of spending what kind of wrangling are we going to see for the other 46 weeks of spending -- do we go through this another 7 times?

To make matter worse, I have no idea what is meant when they say "delay in funding major provisions". Carrying my 24 year old daughter on my policy is a major provision to me. Others, having coverage for pre-existing conditions would be a major provision and since my daughter also has a pre-existing condition so do I. Still others are welcoming the removal of life-time caps as a major provision. So, what exactly is delayed and what are the insurance companies saying about all of the start-up costs being paid out of pocket only to find that the in stream of revenue they were counting on is delayed a year and what will that do for the value of those insurance company stocks. One presumes contracts have been signed and things like that so what are they doing about these broken contracts. Outwardly, it looks like a delay would cause problems far more massive than the few glitches that always occur with the roll out of something new and big. Remember Y2K where some feared massive computer failures but it turned out that the glitches were only minor. At this juncture far more problems will be caused by delay than problems avoided by delay -- that I can assure you.

enough credit. Even people who don't usually pay attention or care what our Government does will know who they should blame for this.
This is the 3rd? time in 2 years they have threatened the country with economic Armageddon?
And it isn't just those in the center. There will be a TON of "republicans" who will think this is a FANTASTIC idea, until they stop getting their goodies from Uncle Sam/have to feel the pain of this themselves/realize how integral the Fed Govt actually IS to the daily operation of the Country.

Yeah, if this goes on even until the end of the year, they will be so fucked by next November they can kiss the House goodbye. If they actually are crazy enough to default on the debt, the GOP won't win another Presidential election until 2050.

Rove ginned up enough "support" for the GOP, that he might actually GET his Permanent Majority.
But it will be a DEMOCRATIC Majority.
