Now Lee Terry (R-NE) will give up his paycheck during the shutdown

Source: OMAHA WORLD HERALD

By Joseph Morton

WASHINGTON - Rep. Lee Terry is giving up his pay during the government shutdown after all.

The Omaha Republican also issued a full apology for comments he made to The World-Herald last week.

“The other day I made a statement that I would put my needs above others in crisis," Terry said in the statement. "I'm ashamed of my comments. It was not leadership. It is not how I was raised. It is not the nature of my character. It is not what I want to teach my sons. I apologize for my hurtful remarks when so many others are feeling the pain of Washington's dysfunction."

Terry is asking for his paycheck to be withheld until furloughed employees get their paychecks.

FULL story at link.

Notice it will be withheld until it is over, not donated to charity like others are doing.

would have an idea how to manage their money to the point where they're not living paycheck to paycheck with a $174K (guaranteed) salary, with pension and full, diamond-encrusted platinum benefits ...

He'll have to cash in some stocks or some other horrible thing. Me thinks he may have gotten some pretty heavy blowback from his arrogant insensitivity. We know this wasn't driven by any compassion for what the furloughed workers are going through. He is still an ass.

The locals who rely on tourism -- October 1 is the beginning of the fall fishing season -- aren't going to get any tourism dollars held. The long stretch of beach is closed. Going to the beaches and fishing is what people want to do this time of year. Now they can't do that. The state parks are open, but you have to check and see what is state and what is national, which is annoying. I get the feeling that the local economy depends on tourism dollars to make it through the year. We got warm, even grateful, welcomes in each place we shopped or ate. We went in one store by error and I hated the disappointed looks when we all realized we were in the wrong place. And that was Tuesday. What is going to happen as this selfish farce goes on? And if the government is shut down, why the hell are the people who shut it down getting paid and letting their constituents suffer like that? Reminds me of Animal Farm: "some of us are more equal than others"

Mr. Lee, this will not make a dent in anything.

I would bet most of us would live well on your salary and perks. Your gesture means nothing to me.

I wish all of you who supposedly represent us in Washington would have a chance to live like we do. Phooey on you and your cohorts.

No check now but you'll get it later? Big sacrifice!

and his "request" for his pay to be withheld is meaningless. They have to pay him.

I could be wrong, but that's how I understand it.

His constituents will remember and/or hold it against him when it's time to send him back to Congress. He is doing their will by crushing the government, he might as well take the blood money.

was (and IS, keep calling) his spewing of his true beliefs out from under his rock.

Nebraskans (even those to the right) are warm, caring folks. His actions have not been sitting well with his constituents.

The one good thing in all this mess is that the crazies are being forced to comment publicly and those comments are being shared at home. Exposure kills them.

I spent some time perusing their facebook pages. Normally I pay no attention to social networks but I made an exception. I love to see a tp moron squirm.

Those people, this guy, Ellmers, etc, are being crucified. When you look at the historical, (pre-shutdown) the comments pro and con are skewed to the pros. But afterwards? Big shift.

They're scared.

Makes me think that maybe I ought to do a facebook thingy...

BTW, my rep, Susan Brooks isn't catching as much hell. OTOH, I don't think anyone's told her what her position on the issue is yet. In her case I'd feel kinda badly saying anything.

I think these two/three people made these remarks because they actually believed that people would agree with them. They are in their own little world.

Unfortunately, I checked cruz's page and no negatives, but I think they do a better job of cleaning it up. A couple of people remarked that their comments were deleted.

The comments to that first OWH article were many and they were brutal with a high "like" count. Terry had to apply this tourniquet to stop the bleeding. He lost a lot of political blood as it is. Interesting too that Terry would choose to highlight "Washington's dysfunction" when he has been a constant source for that dysfunction. I'm sure that will not be lost on OWH readers.

Look, dickhead. . .the only reason you're doing this at all is because someone somewhere made you look like the callous, self-interested, self-absorbed dipshit you are. This is not a true gesture. . .this is someone saving his political skin because the winds are blowing against him, not for him.

The problem is, the rubes in your district that re-elect your sorry ass will eat up your act of "grace." I wouldn't be surprised that you demand ALL your back pay when this is over since your paycheck is being "withheld."

Fuck off, asshat! Everyone with half a brain sees through this. Unfortunately, the dumbasses in your district that vote for you don't have half a brains and you will be re-elected in 2014.

That's actually a real apology!!

Not an "I'm sorry if...", not an "I regret...", but a genuinely sincere (sounding) apology! Holy SHIT!

No doubt he's a self-centered asshole, I'm not completely naïve. But when's the last time you saw one of those, especially from a goddamn Republican??
