Reports are coming in across the state of Ohio Saturday that food stamp machines are not working.

NewsChannel 5 has received several phone calls from Ohio Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card users who said their food stamp cards are not working at grocery stores. When they attempt to make a transaction, an error appears stating the transaction was not approved.

Our news desk has spoken to several grocery stores throughout the northeast Ohio area that said they are receiving complaints from customers about the cards not working as well.

WEWS has contacted local and state job and family services about the issue, as well as the Ohio EBT customer service and has yet to receive any comment.

EBT Card Problems Caused by Computer Issues

01:44pm, October 12, 2013

(Memphis) A computer issue caused problems for EBT card users in several states Saturday, including Mississippi.

According to Julia Bryan, spokesperson for the Mississippi Department of Human Resources, a Xerox facility that handles EBT card services for several states experienced equipment problems Saturday morning.

The outage caused EBT cards to be rejected at retailers in 17 states that are serviced by that Xerox facility.

Bryan says the issue should be resolved soon and is in no way linked to the government shutdown.

many work long days and survive with bus service that adds hours on top of that. Many of them have little hope, (not that we have given them much reason to have any) -

"76% of SNAP households included a child, an elderly person, or a disabled person. These vulnerable households receive 83% of all SNAP benefits.", Here.

which leaves only a small number who are actually able to do anything. Without the people who make more money, who vote, who are better educated, who push things to happen, most will likely sit and quietly starve, along with their children and elderly folks (who compromise the biggest share of food stamp recipients).

Indiana had something similar going on a few years back with unemployment benefits. They kept blaming "software issues."

And it always seems to happen on a weekend, when not much can be done about it. All of Indiana's problems, as I recall, happened over the weekend.

are going to find this out at the check stand. And they will have to try to figure out how to feed the kids tonight. OMG. We have elected government officials who are willing to let American citizens go hungry.

I know someone who works at Krogers.

This is a big chain in Houston.

A lot of people are on food stamps now.

I hope it isn't some republicans throwing a fit because of what is happening in Washington.

They can always go dumpster diving, we have flights to catch home. Can't let my dinner get cold before I get there.

"It all started when Democrats began lining up to make an endless string of unanimous consent requests for a vote on a “clean” continuing resolution to open up the government.

Over the course of about 25 minutes, Democrats offered 37 unanimous consent requests, all of which were denied by the presiding officer, GOP Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, due to a lack of appropriate clearances.

Democrats could have gone on all day making the unanimous consent requests, and that could have brought a lot of media attention — and made members miss their flights home."

There should be a backup system. I know they can load emergency cash onto the cards so that people have enough food for the weekend.

The legislators get credit cards paid for by the taxpayers, why not use those???

with family and friends still residing there in various parts of the state, I can vouch for the fact that the Job and Family Services Dept. isn't going to give a tenth of a pellet of rat shit about this. In fact, its true formal name is the Dept. of No Jobs and Screw Your Family Services. And don't even get me started on how I know that.

In Texas the food stamp cards get roloaded on the 7th, 8th, or 9th.

This is what I have been told.

My friends card gets loaded on the 9th.

This would be the first Saturday to go shopping.

My friend gets $200, and also uses lots of coupons.

He usually spends about $150.00, keeps back the rest for milk, bread, and eggs.

I bet the store profits went down today.

It's happening in Maine too. I overheard to cashiers talking -- it sounded like a rolling thing...one location would shut down for a while, and then another...
