Canadians Seek Dick Cheney's Arrest For War Crimes During Upcoming Visit

Source: HuffPo

An international volunteer organization urged Canadian authorities to arrest former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney on war crimes charges when he visits the 2013 Toronto Global Forum later this week.

Lawyers Against the War argued in a letter dated Sunday that Toronto Police Chief William Blair and Ontario Attorney General John Gerretsen have a duty to arrest Cheney "as a person suspected on reasonable grounds of authorizing, counseling, aiding, abetting and failing to prevent torture.”

“Once Richard (Dick) Cheney enters Canada … Canada must ensure that Dick Cheney is either investigated and prosecuted for the indictable offence of torture in Canada or extradited to another country willing and able to do so," Lawyers Against the War's Gail Davidson wrote.

The letter contended that Toronto police are legally obligated to arrest Cheney to prevent him from “escaping to the United States.” The organization argued that Canadian law would legally allow authorities to do so:

Yeah, it's a volunteer group, and Satan the Cheney will likely go unmolested on his trip, but I gotta give them a tip of the hat for trying!

... let it be, let it be! But I bet they don't. Isn't Canada one of the U.S. lackies? You know, we are slowly but surely pissing off the whole entire world, and one of these days this kind of an event just might happen as they slip into another country. Be still my heart. What a glorius day if the junta was apprehended and held accountable in a REAL court of International Law!

Who do ya think is pushing that tar sands mess that the USA is gleaning the oil from for pennies a barrel?

and the waste going to the Koch bros to market across the globe because North American environmental laws won't allow us to burn it here.

" Isn't Canada one of the U.S. lackies? "

Unwillingly, yes - we are.

Sad that.

And this isn't setting too well with the public up there, is it? I'm sure there will be a giant protest wherever it is that Cheney is going to rub unwelcome salts into the wound of the world. If I was young and rich, I would go there to add my voice to the protest.

Chairman Harper, a psychopath himself is a Cheney big oil (tar sand) man wannabe, he's probably going to pick his brain on how to handle the up and coming Enbridge pipeline blockades.

citing Canada as "too dangerous."

Many other countries have caught on to the fact that war criminals can and should be tried. Just ask Kissinger, who can't travel anywhere.

The malign Dick Cheney is in Toronto this week, having apparently conquered his fear of Canada and the anti-torture protests that made him cancel an April speech last year-end. I don’t know how another war criminal has made it across our border — Kissinger visits often — but there Cheney will be on Halloween at noon, speaking to the Toronto Forum of the International Economic Forum of the Americas in the glassy erotic climes of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

What ho! Blood will run from the taps. A sudden chill will envelop the city.

There had been worries. “God forbid there was ever a [health] emergency,” his speech booker said of the April cancellation, given that the last time Cheney was in Canada, he had had to hide inside for simply hours from Vancouver anti-torture demonstrators.

Did he think they were going to shoot him in the face? Cheney himself shot a 78-year-old man in the face in 2006 (the victim apologized) and in this country, he’d be in jail for that. Cheney does not get us. Canadian anti-torture demonstrators are usually hooded and kneeling because they know full well that violence would destroy the point they’re making. They don’t even throw pies. Cheney Halloween masks are fun though.

It's about as useful as demanding the US government arrest our war criminals. One of the jokes going around during the Bush residency was "What's 18" long and hangs between George Bush's legs?" "Stephen Harper's tie.".

If anyone wanted to, state officials could make plenty of trouble for him. Not necessarily anything lasting, but there's tons of legal basis to charge him for elements of his crimes committed in any given state. And even if it gets thrown out of court, at least someone would be trying to redeem this country's complicity in Il Douché's reign of terror.
