December 2015 release for new 'Star Wars' film

Source: AFP

Los Angeles (AFP) - The first of a hotly-anticipated new series of "Star Wars" movies will be released on December 18, 2015, the makers of the legendary sci-fi franchise said Thursday.

The announcement lays to rest reports suggesting that the film, announced last year for 2015, might have to be pushed back to the following year.

"We're very excited to share the official 2015 release date for 'Star Wars: Episode VII'," said Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, which bought "Star Wars" creator George Lucas's company Lucasfilm last year.

The new movie "will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season," but the 2015 release date will "also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture," he added.

Nov 2013

1. Over-involvement of George Lucas
2. Over-reliance on original core characters
3. Over-reliance on "Star Wars Universe" material, specifically the Zahn novels

Other than that, it should be smooth sailing!

on edit: Just realized that this would be the first non-May debut for a live-action Star Wars film. Hmm...

Empire came out in 1980 and Return of the Jedi in '83 - my senior year in college, and on the day of my last final before graduation. The movie price at the theater I went to suddenly increased to $4.50 and I clearly remember having only a $5 bill in my pocket, so no popcorn buying (but I didn't care because I was damn sure going to find a way to be there at the finale film of the trilogy).

And for some reason, it comes up frequently in conversation for me.

So I transposed the numbers.

If he's going to do to Star Wars what he did to Star Trek, The Phantom Menace will look good by comparison.

the lens flare thing was a stylistic choice he did for Star Trek. But he didn't do it for Lost or Alias or anything else he did. He's not going to do it for Star Wars.

didn't bother me as much as blatantly ripping off scenes from Wrath of Khan. And the whole "we need Khan to bring Kirk back to life" thing was stupid, considering they had 42 other people with Khan's same blood type in the cargo hold.

Usually gets top billing on worst of's.
The only thing I can appreciate about it besides the really bad taste
of the time demonstrated so garishly is the sound effects provided by "The Beam".
Solace in the decent job done on Next Gen, and the 72 original episodes, all
of which look better than that last piece of dreck.

they rolled Khan and Search For Spock up (badly) into one movie. I guess the next one will be about bringing back a whale from the past. Why can't hollywood do anything original?

It tends to over-expose an image, or obliterate your subject. Sometimes, it's a nice effect, such as getting a rainbow flare on a landscape pic with the sun in the frame. In Abrams' case, he'd never heard of it before he then went overboard with the effect in the Star Trek movie, making it such a distraction that it was difficult to enjoy what was left of the story.

Here's an example from wikipedia:

much to some sense of relief, that while Abrams will indeed be directing, the screenplay will be written by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan.

Yep.....the guy who wrote the screenplay for "The Empire Strikes Back" (along with the late Leigh Brackett, who passed away before Episode V was released, though she was given screenplay credit with Mr. Kasdan).

That might help, I'm hoping. Kasdan's screenplay for "The Empire Strikes Back" is what made the film so good, and what elevated the entire Star Wars franchise into the realm of epic space opera.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/24/5025386/j-j-abrams-and-lawrence-kasdan-taking-over-as-writers-of-star-wars-episode-vii

Also remember that Kasdan wrote the screenplay for "Raiders of the Lost Ark" as well.

-Lucas is not director. Having him help out with creative is fine, but his directing is terrible. The two best SW (Empire and Jedi) happened to be ones NOT directed by him.

-It's being shot on film, and is using practical effects and models (rather than CGI) wherever possible.

-Disney agreed to push the release date back a year. If they were not concerned with making quality, they would have ignored Abrams and stuck to the original 2014 release.
