'We were wrong': CBS's Lara Logan apologizes for Benghazi report
Source: CNN
CBS correspondent Lara Logan apologized Friday and said the network was "wrong" for a "60 Minutes" report that raised questions about the Obama administration's response to last year's attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. The assault left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens.
"In this case, we were wrong. We made a mistake," she said on "CBS This Morning." "That's disappointing for any journalist. It's very disappointing for me."
A primary source for the "60 Minutes" report on October 27 was a security contractor using the pseudonym "Morgan Jones," later identified as Dylan Davies. Davies told CBS he was able to reach the Benghazi compound on the night of September 11, 2012, scale a wall and even fight off a militant.
That story cast doubt on whether the Obama administration sent all possible help to try to save Stevens and his three colleagues. The "60 Minutes" story was cited by congressional Republicans who have demanded to know why a military rescue was not attempted . . .

I hope that CBS will also make a public apology on 60 Minutes this Sunday.
I don't get it, thousands of people both civilian and military, died during the Bush years: two wars, 9/11/01, 60 plus people attacked by terrorists at diplomatic posts, etc. and the RW is foaming at the mouth over four people????
The death of the ambassador and the others was a tragedy that I hope is never repeated, but the way the RW is going after Obama and Hillary is way over the top.

(45,790 posts)When Lara Logan Trashed Michael Hastings
Worth re-visiting the McChrystal backlash in light of, you know. Matt Taibbi covered it in Rolling Stone in 2011 in one of his classics. Excerpt:
http://m.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/taibblog/lara-logan-you-suck-20100628
I thought I'd seen everything when I read David Brooks saying out loud in a New York Times column that reporters should sit on damaging comments to save their sources from their own idiocy. But now we get CBS News Chief Foreign Correspondent Lara Logan slamming our own Michael Hastings on CNN's "Reliable Sources" program, agreeing that the Rolling Stone reporter violated an "unspoken agreement" that journalists are not supposed to "embarrass [the troops] by reporting insults and banter."
Anyone who wants to know why network television news hasn't mattered since the seventies just needs to check out this appearance by Logan. Here's CBS's chief foreign correspondent saying out loud on TV that when the man running a war that's killing thousands of young men and women every year steps on his own dick in front of a journalist, that journalist is supposed to eat the story so as not to embarrass the flag. And the part that really gets me is Logan bitching about how Hastings was dishonest to use human warmth and charm to build up enough of a rapport with his sources that they felt comfortable running their mouths off in front of him....
As to this whole "unspoken agreement" business: the reason Lara Logan thinks this is because she's like pretty much every other "reputable" journalist in this country, in that she suffers from a profound confusion about who she's supposed to be working for. I know this from my years covering presidential campaigns, where the same dynamic applies. Hey, assholes: you do not work for the people you're covering! Jesus, is this concept that fucking hard?

The Two Poles of Journalism
Michael Hastings and Lara Logan illustrate the difference between afflicting and serving the powerful
BY GLENN GREENWALD
http://www.salon.com/2010/06/28/journalism_9/
<<With his Rolling Stone article on Gen. McChrystal, Michael Hastings has become both the personification of, and spokesperson for, Real Journalism, and as a result, has provoked intense animosity from establishment-serving reporters everywhere. He apparently committed the gravest sin: he exposed and embarrassed rather than flattered and protected a powerful government official, and in our upside-down media culture, doing that is a sign of irresponsibility rather than fulfillment of the basic journalistic function. As Barrett Brown notes in this excellent defense, Hastings in 2008 did to the establishment media what he did to Gen. McChyrstal exposed what they do and how they think by writing the truth after he quit Newsweek (where he was the Baghdad correspondent) and wrote a damning exposé about how the media distorts war coverage. As Brown put it: Hastings ensured that he would never be trusted by the establishment media ever again.
Yesterday, Hastings was interviewed on CNNs Reliable Sources about the criticisms he has received from media figures over his article, and that was followed by a segment with CBS Lara Logan, who lambasted him. I really recommend watching these two segments (video below), as they illustrate the two poles of journalism: those who view their role as exposing the relevant secrets of the powerful (Hastings) and those who view their role as protecting those secrets and serving the interests of those officials (Logan). Amazingly, Logan sounds like the most devoted member of McChyrstals P.R. staff or even his family: so furious is she that Hastings would publish an article that reflected negatively on this Fine, Great Man (whom she supposedly covers) so devoted is she to the interests of this military official that, at one point, she drops the neutral journalist mask and shows her Bill Kristol face, and actually spat: Michael Hastings has never served his country the way McChrystal has. >>

And just b/c the guy has a book coming out, that is all the more reason to check the source. What an author puts in a book is not necessarily the truth and nothing but. The journalists should have been all the more skeptical b/c having a book come out is obviously a motive to tell a tall tale that will sell more books, be made into a movie, and make million$ for the source. That's a powerful motive to embellish details and outright lie. 60 Mins. should have checked this guy out thoroughly before going with the interview.

(8,464 posts)Says It Can't Vouch for the Truth of Mike Daisey's Monologue about Apple in China
This American Life and American Public Medias Marketplace will reveal that a story first broadcast in January on This American Life contained numerous fabrications.
This American Life will devote its entire program this weekend to detailing the errors in the story, which was an excerpt of Mike Daisey's critically acclaimed one-man show, "The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs." In it, Daisey tells how he visited a factory owned by Foxconn that manufactures iPhones and iPads in Shenzhen China. He has performed the monologue in theaters around the country; it's currently at the Public Theater in New York. Tonights This American Life program will include a segment from Marketplaces Rob Schmitz, and interviews with Daisey himself. Marketplace will feature a shorter version of Schmitz's report earlier in the evening.
When the original 39-minute excerpt was broadcast on This American Life on January 6, 2012, Marketplace China Correspondent Rob Schmitz wondered about its truth. Marketplace had done a lot of reporting on Foxconn and Apples supply chain in China in the past, and Schmitz had first-hand knowledge of the issues. He located and interviewed Daisey's Chinese interpreter Li Guifen (who goes by the name Cathy Lee professionally with westerners). She disputed much of what Daisey has been telling theater audiences since 2010 and much of what he said on the radio.
During fact checking before the broadcast of Daisey's story, This American Life staffers asked Daisey for this interpreter's contact information. Daisey told them her real name was Anna, not Cathy as he says in his monologue, and he said that the cell phone number he had for her didn't work any more. He said he had no way to reach her.

13 Benghazis That Occurred on Bush's Watch Without a Peep from Fox News

At 6:39 a.m. on that autumn day in 1983, 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three American civilians were killed and another 60 were injured as a result of a horrific explosion detonated by a terrorist suicide truck bomb that destroyed the Marine barracks at the airport in Beirut, Lebanon.

(2,393 posts)You were wrong for pandering to right wing nut jobs. And you would not admit you propagated a lie until you were forced to. You knew it was a lie from the beginning and you went ahead, anyway. Eat crow.

(1,805 posts)In Wikipedia, there's the bit about her being sexually assaulted in Egypt. I don't doubt that it happened, but "she said the incident involved 200300 men and lasted around 25 minutes". What is that, a dude every 15 seconds? Rape is without a doubt a horrendous act and I'm not making any excuses for it in the least. But is that really believable?

Sorry kids, but you allowed people to see that behind all that lovely journalistic crap were a bunch of clowns hiding behind a curtain. It is not that we do not need real journalism; why else would we heap honors upon Jon Stewart who at times seems to beg to be allowed to be the guy who tells fart jokes.

But it is clear that the oligarchy has bought, pushed, and shoved itself into dominating the press, even PBS shows signs of corporate influence. Do not complain when we do not respect you. You have allowed Jounralism to be kidnapped. We will keepin blogging until she is freed, or at the very least, avenged.

(10,612 posts)Those who are smart go along with it. Proper traditional news organisations embrace social media and the blogosphere. It's another means to achieve balance and to maintain credibility.
60 Minutes (as of late) doesn't seem to achieve this balance. Take it with a pinch of salt.

(66,421 posts)are exposed, they stonewall for a while, even spending time the following week on the show reading letters praising the story, but ignoring the *already available* news about the lies and the liar that they based the story on; but NO letters questioning the story are read.
Finally, when they can't cover it up any longer, they offer a Emily Latella "Never mind," on a different show (or, in other situations, buried deep in the newspaper), hoping most people won't see it.
By this point, the lie has had time to do its dirty work, so most who swallowed it will dig in their heels and reject any attemot at correcting their error. It has also given 3 craven RW senators an excuse to block judicial appointments.
Mission accomplished.

(7,208 posts)Dan Rather was fired for far less, and he was a real journalist. Lara Logan is not.

(5,029 posts)a dwindling Demographic. It does not take a marketing guru to see demographics have changed, if big business wants to capture their market share they need to start catering to to the larger demographic. So companies who own the media like GE, can sell more blenders and Disney can sell more tickets to mouse land. SIMPLE ECONOMICS, who owns the media, how much more do they want to make their product more market friendly to the masses. The Masses dictate sales, end of economics 101 DU style.

(36 posts)find out who was behind Dylan Davies. It could get juicy and might destroy some wingnuts.
I can't get behind the firing of Lara Logan without saying Dan Rather's firing was justified. I don't and won't. Logan was duped by a source. Rather was duped by his own producer if I remember correctly. Regardless. CBS needs to do better verification as it seems somebody out there is determined to discredit them. I want to know who.
