PHILIPPINE TYPHOON DEATH TOLL COULD REACH 10,000

TACLOBAN, Philippines (AP) — A senior regional police official and a city administrator in the typhoon-ravaged Tacloban city in the central Philippines say the death toll there could reach 10,000 people.

Regional police chief Elmer Soria said he was briefed by Leyte provincial Gov. Dominic Petilla on Saturday and told there were about 10,000 deaths on the island, mostly by drowning and from collapsed buildings.

Tacloban city administrator Tecson Lim said that the death toll in the city alone "could go up to 10,000."

When you have tens, possibly hundreds, of millions of people turned into climate refugees, forced to move away from islands and the coastline, you will inevitably have conflict, social unrest, and war.

At the same time, much coastal farmland, vital for rice production, will also be wiped out, leading to starvation.

The inevitable change is most assuredly NOT good.

another sign of the climate change occurring all over the world. Strongest storm probably in history with 195mph winds with gusts to 235mph. Unbelievable.

I guess that means their time zone. This link is to a map that shows the times it will reach various locations. It is expected to hit the shore of Viet Nam and then head inland to Hanoi.

The latest forecast on the BBC has it going a bit further north than that, so the eye doesn't touch land until about 1800 GMT Sunday (ie about 6 and a half hours from now)

And Weather Underground has it even further north and reaching land later still:

A lot weaker than when it hit the Philippines.

Update: It's on the south-western tip of the Chinese island of Hainan right now:

The Pacific has many qualities that can produce deadly typhoons/hurricanes, especially when they travel in the strange arc type patterns where they build up energy.

I've talk to one friend down there who was not affected at all and is way out of the path of the hurricane. I know people who live or are from areas like Manila who still were hit hard.
