Watch the moment the Olympic Torch was handed over IN SPACE during relay for Sochi Winter Games
Source: Mirror
Russian astronauts performed the handover during a live broadcast as part of the build up to the Russian Games
This was the incredible moment Russian astronauts handed over the Olympic Torch - 260 miles above Earth.
Oleg Kotov and Sergey Ryazanskiy performed the handover during a five-hour spacewalk on the International Space Station as part of the relay for the Sochi Winter Games in Russia in 2014.
The space flight was the latest leg in what will be the longest torch relay before a Winter Olympics, which President Vladimir Putin hopes will boost Russias image and show what it can achieve more than two decades after the Soviet Union collapsed.

(5,029 posts)I love the Olympics, the last of some what commercialized sports. Trials for the USA start on NBC SN Nov. 15 th. and run through Jan. 2014. I think Russia has tempered its bias against the GLBT community, lets hope!
PS. Love the new smileys!

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us.....

(21,132 posts)This strikes me more like Apollo-Soyuz than Voyager 1, however. It's a huge expenditure of time and resource for a feel-good exercise instead of doing real science and exploration. To me, this sabotages the space program by making it a PR unit (at least in perception) rather than the cutting edge efforts to understand the universe around us.

(21,132 posts)There is also the cost of capacity of the supply ship. Something else might have come instead.
All of this to pass an unlit torch in a vacuum. I have to agree with mahannah.

Should I use it, will that make everyone happy, before you flame me, you may want to do a little research first. Sorry I got your dander up, or anything else for that matter.

(5,029 posts)between he or she. Figured "It" was the choice many were looking for. Before you flame you want to do a little research on RR. However, that would require a little work. Most can not read beyond a few simple sentences.

(26,117 posts)Do a little research on you? What exactly should I look for? And what on earth could justify calling a human being "it?"
The "choice" people are looking for is for you to refer to this person as "he." Get it?

(45,319 posts)the poster is corrected. There is a BOG regular who calls me he/she on purpose, even in response to posts that say 'As a gay man...' He/she. Constantly. That poster's cohort says noting to correct him.
