The FDA Is 'Coming After Your Doughnuts,' Rand Paul Warns
Source: Talkingpointsmemo
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) slammed the Food and Drug Administration's "nanny state" at an event Monday, warning attendees that the agency is "coming after your doughnuts!"
At a Republican fundraiser in Charleston, S.C., Paul said the Affordable Care Act is a slippery slope leading to Americans being denied "Big Gulps" and doughnuts. Last week, the FDA announced it would require the food industry to phase out all trans fats.
"The FDA has banned unilaterally -- some unelected bureaucrat has banned trans fats," he said. "So I say we need to line every one of them up. I want to see how skinny or how fat the FDA agents are who are making the rules on this."
.......
"If we're gonna have a nanny state, and everybody's gotta eat the right thing and you can't eat a doughnut, maybe we ought to just enforce it on the government workers first," he said.

(5,364 posts)I run into so many uninformed dunderheads that are always screaming freedom/liberty ect as they hang their causes on the stupidest trivial things like junk food. Commercially baked goods, french fries etc were all made without trans fats up till relatively recently, it's just that trans fats are cheaper for "Foodco" to use. Same thing with high-fructose corn syrup; Just a cheap way of adding sugar and body to foods like ketchup and sauces and such.
I try to tell this to those lunkheads who define their liberty by their right to eat junk food but they just blow it off as though I was some effete intellectual killjoy.
Fuck 'em, let them die. They're all conservatives anyway.
By the way, did you mean 1990's and not 1890's in your post?

(53,661 posts)You stole this from that 'doctor' who went on the attack against Michelle Obama, saying people would be forced to eat fruits and vegetables!
Oh, the horror!
Probably got his 'Dr.' title from a diploma mill just like you, Rand. Is that where you got this tripe, from your 'business' located in a P. O. Box or did you tune into Rush?
And you were going to quit because of the big bad Rachel Maddox hurt your little feelings and you can't fight her. After all, she doesn't look like she eats doughnuts or big gulps but she respects her body, unlike you.
Go and steal some new ideas. On second thought, just buzz off. Don't let the screen door hit you on the ass on your way out.
BTW, about your daddy... I found a video that applies to your nanny state and you:
No, I am not going to be nice about it.
When your nanny state gets out of other people's underwear, and your troglodyte economic schemes quit stealing from my pocket, we'll talk about nannies, Mr. Aqua Buddha Buddy...

But the police are not ashamed of eating donuts. Brain food, ya know:

(30,247 posts)Dunkin is much more affordable for the average Joe. Although, in my town there are two places that a thief would be stupid to rob: the diner and the most popular pizzeria. The cops are always eating in both.
Which reminds me of a funny story. Some years ago a guy decided to rob a bar in Brooklyn. What he didn't know was that it was owned by a former cop and that other cops hanged around there in their off hours. When he aimed a gun at the owner, not only did the owner pull out his own gun, but so did most of the people who were at the bar.

(53,661 posts)And they are almost as pricey as Starbucks, so it's best to get them at the grocery store if one is having a donut attack...
In about a dozen mile radius the ratio of donut shops to Starbucks (or others shops competing with them) is about 20:1.
Closest Dunkin' charges over a dollar for one plain glazed donut. A dozen is twenty bucks. So, they are off my list, and it's kind of a bummer, but people's tastes vary from one region to another.
Now, get out in the far suburbs, and Krispy Kreme has cars lined up in the parking lot and the drive through window. They aren't cheap, but then they are in a pricey area.
I really enjoyed that diner story, it must have looked like something right out of a movie.
I found this picture here, apparently in NYC:
Makes me want a donut right now. Fat chance of that, though...

(30,247 posts)Where I live we have several Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. I have a Dunkin a block away. I like their coffee, ice tea in summer and the occasional muffin. I'm not a donut eater, so they don't really tempt me. BTW, I live in a pretty expensive neighborhood, but a dozen donuts are not $20.00. They have a lot of Dunkin coupons in the newspapers, you may be able to get your donut fix for cheap. Right now I have a Dunkin card that entitles me to a free medium coffee every Monday for the months of October and November.

(4,741 posts)And yet DD and Star$ are doing quite well. Wouldn't surprise me if all their products nationwide are already compliant - NYC is such a huge market that it doesn't always make sense to have two different product lines, just make them all to NYC standards. Anyway, it's not "taking your donuts away" so much as "removing useless toxins* from your donuts!"
* - yes I know they aren't toxic per se, but as a chemist-chef I know they serve no culinary or nutritional purpose, it's purely economic. Extended shelf life and whatnot.

(1,867 posts)Essentially the FDA just made salad dressing and dipping sauce illegal. Margarine too. This is nanny state horse crap that should be required to go through the legislative process, not be the mandate of people in appointed offices.
Not to mention the act that, yet again, we seem to be legislating out of FOX's Sunday night animation show plots.
I am at the point where i want neither party in charge any more. They all need done away with.

(16,191 posts)Someone should tell Rand Paul that donuts don't require trans fats. Nobody is taking your donuts away. They're just taking away one ingredient that has never been needed.
Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, the primary trans fat being targeted, is just vegetable oil with a little extra hydrogen added so that it will make a solid stick at room temperature. In most cases you can just substitute liquid vegetable oil and accomplish the exact same thing...and you'll be healthier for doing so.
BTW, with most recipes, the substitution is simple. 1 cup of margarine = 7/8 cup of vegetable oil + 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
freshwest
(53,661 posts)Someone told me to whip olive oil and butter, but talked to someone who said when you whip it, you are adding air that has hydrogen... So IDK!!!
BTW, Rand is... I'm trying to stop bashing that guy... Okay, I'll post on another thread to keep myself calm. Let me know about the other, though,, TIA.
thefool_wa
(1,867 posts)Its not like trans fats are created by some kind of mysterious process, they literally use a hydrogen aerator to do nothing more than whip the oils to a different consistency.
I think this is a bad move, especially since I am not sure there is evidence to say that doing this will decrease anything as far as health problems are concerned. People will still eat whatever they want, myself included, whether or not it is "good for me". That's what we call America Plus, there are tons of factors that contribute to the health problems that Trans Fats are typically blamed exclusively for.
Plus, you know, American Dad did it

(7,349 posts)Just melt the butter on low and stir in the olive oil. It firms up nicely in the fridge and doesn't separate.

(1,867 posts)But this still effectively takes margarine off the market. I am not cool with that.

(1,867 posts)Everyone here who has pointed out that we did have palatable food before the discovery of trans fat processes is missing a huge problem with reverting to the time before they were used.
In many cases we are talking about reverting to using things like beef tallow and pig lard, which are equally as bad if not worse depending on the application.
This is more short sighted BS and further proof our dysfunctional government has no grasp on the real world.

(11,843 posts)A few years back, you could pick up almost any package in a grocery store and the list of ingredients would include several partially hydrogenated this or thats. Products are now much less likely to contain them.

(53,661 posts)His version of what the liver would say being forced to process them:
'What am I supposed to do with this? She ate wax!'
After that it was butter and olive oil for me, as the body does know what to do with that.
He also said the birth control pills of the era put the body out of balance, were not as complex as they should have been.
'It's like burning down the barn to get rid of rats,' he said.
They weren't made as they are now, they were changed to lower doses of hormones for safety.
We can live without the transfats, they are mostly, AFAIK, a commercial product, not based on good nutrition.

(1,254 posts)on the right bitching about the nanny state should realize that the main reason health care costs are skyrocketing in this country is because chronic illness is skyrocketing in this county. Heart disease, cancer and diabetes mainly brought about by unhealthy live styles, lack of exercise, too much sugar and trans fats in our diets. If we want to reduce health care costs in this country and thus reduce the cost of health insurance, we have to take a more aggressive approach aimed at preventive measures, rather than throwing money at the aftermath. But the right choses to ignore that because going after Obama or anyone in his administration is more important than solving the health crisis in this country.

The FEDS ar coming after your doughnuts! Because they didn't come after your guns yet!
Still beating that ACA dead horse, huh, Rand? We so loved you voting for cut VA hospitals, food stamps, the sequester, the shutdown and cackling with your buddies about how much fun it'd be to 'manage catastrophe.'
Meanwhile, your state leads the way in red states signed up for the ACA. Boofuckinghoo, Rand.
Oooh, and at the low blows:
Unelected bureaucrats - gee, Rand, didn't you know that is to prevent them discriminating?
And bureaucrats - had to get that old moniker in. Kiss my foot, Rand.
Wanna see them trotted out in a criminal lineup to be inspected by who, you, you little Napoleon - who are you giving orders to?
To see their weight? Gee, stay classy there, asswipe. Honestly, dude, you ain't no Brad Pitt.
A nanny state, uh? Guess those old diatribes from Rush really did the job. 'Womb to the Tomb' is what you're counting on to resonate in those empty skulls - and you really do insult your state, acting like donuts and big gulps is such a priority.
Speaking of Wombs there, pal, get your nosy state outta the lady parts!
And ow, snap, enforce it on government workers, first! You know, those guys who actually have degrees in nutrition, science (say the word, Rand, c'mon, you can do it, just say.. sciii-ennce!) and may be real doctors on the payroll instead of faux doctors, uh, like yourself.
Oh, and by the way, do something anatomically impossible to yourself. Since you're so concerned about sex...
Okay, I'll get off Rand's case for a while. But I truly despise this lying Kochroach.

(23,156 posts)Personally, I find that the quality of commercial donuts has gone so much that I never buy them anymore. Way back when I was in high school I'd occasionally get up early in the morning and make donuts from scratch. My younger sister still has fond memories of me doing this.
Haven't made them since high school, but I've thought about it lately.
