'X's marking spots where JFK shot removed
| November 19, 2013 | Updated: November 19, 2013 2:48pm

DALLAS (AP) — The 'X's that mark the spots on the street where President John F. Kennedy was assassinated are gone.

The disappearance of the marks came as Dallas prepares for Friday's events that will solemnly commemorate the 50th anniversary of JFK being assassinated. Kennedy's motorcade was passing through Dealey Plaza when shots rang out on Nov. 22, 1963.

The markings on Elm Street are not done by city, nor does the city know who does it.

City spokesman Frank Librio said workers are laying asphalt to level out the street and remove any trip hazards. He adds that "with thousands visiting the area this week we think that is prudent."

1. Taking Friday off work, and taking the DART train to downtown

Nov 2013

I know they'll have things closed off, but if I can get off at the West End station and mill around...or possibly, take the train to Reunion station. The train travels on top of the triple underpass. Maybe get a few glimpses from there without having a ticket.

A ticket, for God's sakes! The many times I have gone to the grassy knoll and sat for hours and just stared. No street vendors hassling you about conspiracy theories, just peace sitting there and imagining the day. Friday, I won't even be able to venture into a public place without a damned ticket. Pisses me off.

I imagine once this week is over the city will let it be business as usual...the X goes back on the street and the city officials go back to not recognizing the day anymore.

4. I stood on that "X" this past summer.

Drove with my daughter from Florida to home in Colorado. We watched the Zapruder film on her smart phone from the spot that it was filmed.

Two years before we stopped in Memphis and went to the Lorraine hotel.

We plan on going to Washington next summer. Any guess where we will go?

8. The Washington Memorial is half way in the Mall, Lincoln Memorial to its South opposite Grant.

Grant looking South, at the Washington Memorial and behind it the Lincoln Memorial:

I wish Congress had spent the money to polish up the Memorial. It is Bronze and when new or shined very bright. With modern finishes, that bright-nest can last for Decades (as can be seen in some of the Orthodox Churches that shines the globes on their roof and then coated them so they are shinny for decades).

Even not shined it is an impressive memorial, it offsets the Lincoln memorial quite nicely and brings with it the horror of the Civil War.

5. This will be the very first time any Dallas official has gone there on an anniversary
Wed Nov 20, 2013, 04:42 AM

I've lived here 27 yrs, gone there several times on anniversaries. Not once has the city ever acknowledged the anniversary. I can promise you all that any attention being given by the city this week and on Friday is ONLY because of the amount of national and international media attention. Dallas city officials are most likely being dragged there kicking and screaming.

I find myself resenting the way this day is going to be carried out just because people like me who make the trip downtown on a semi regular or regular basis are being shut out. Sure, it was the conspiracy groups that we saw down there each time but they took the moment of silence seriously and gave each anniversary date waaaayyyy more attention then any local official.

Hate to say it, but Dallas is turning this into a dog and pony act this week just to make themselves look good in the media coverage.

I don't know ow much has been covered in the national news, but the crowd that you will see there had to apply to try and win a ticket, go thru Dallas PD background checks, will have to meet elsewhere and be bussed to the site, and will be going thru metal detectors.

The conspiracy group that normally goes there every year was going to sue the city to be allowed into Dealey Plaza. The city and them came to an agreement that the group could gather at The Kennedy Memorial Plaza. The city offered to put up a jumbo screen of the Dealey ceremony so the conspiracy group could watch it but the group told them "no, thanks, we don't want YOUR ceremony interrupting OUR'S".

And about that X. I could never understand people who ran out in the middle of the street to have their pic taken as they stand on it....they literally run out there dodging the heavy traffic. As if standing on the damn sidewalk with the X in the background would ruin their picture taking!

I was there recently and could not believe the people who ran out on the street and posed for photos. I also didn't realize the close proximity of Daley Plaza and the book depository and the grassy knoll. it
