Stoning for adulterers may become legal again in Afghanistan

Source: NBC News

Death by stoning for convicted adulterers is being written into Afghan law, a senior official said on Monday, the latest sign that human rights won at great cost since the Taliban were ousted in 2001 are rolling back as foreign troops withdraw.

"We are working on the draft of a sharia penal code where the punishment for adultery, if there are four eyewitnesses, is stoning," said Rohullah Qarizada, who is part of the sharia Islamic law committee working on the draft and head of the Afghan Independent Bar Association.

Billions have been invested on promoting human rights in Afghanistan over more than 12 years of war and donors fear that hard won progress, particularly for women, may be eroding.

Human Rights Watch reports that they saw a draft provision of the law which states that if a court finds that a couple engaged in sexual intercourse outside of legal marriage, both the man and the woman would be sentenced to “stoning to death if the adulterer or adulteress is married.” And if the “adulterer or adulteress is unmarried” the sentence shall be “whipping 100 lashes.”

It's like it's saying, if you commit adultery, you must get stoned. Reminds me of a song.

The Dark Ages live on, so sad.

The same kind of stuff, some incredible misogyny, goes on with the Saudis, but we're in bed with them because of oil.

Been to Africa, Europe, Asia, north America, south America. Also, to the middle east.

Never been to Pakistan, Afghanistan, or Iran. Can't exactly comment on those places, but the ME was by far my least favorite culture in all the placed I visited. These countries seem worse or just as bad as Saudi Arabia. No thanks - I only want to go due to my RainMan like quest to collect all countries in my world travel quest (actually want to go to all provinces of all countries).

He's all in favor of siding with Muslims against liberals...and he had adulterous relations when married. I wonder how he would like that situation?

And be it Texas or Kansas, it's still improper to trash an entire state's population as if there's a single political viewpoint in place. No matter how tempting it is. Last time around, 3.3 million Texans cast votes for Obama.

down here in TX. This is not my home state & we moved here for a job. Sometimes I feel like I am living in a foreign country.

BUT I can tell you I've met a lot of great progressive folks down here (they are quiet but you can find them when you sign up to help on campaigns as I did in 2008 for Obama). The bigoted old guys and gals are dying off and this state will be in play again by 2020.

We may even be able to push Wendy into the governor's seat. So a little support here would be nice.
