Fallen Omaha soldier's widow receives Purple Heart medal (KIA WWII)

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Paul Hammel

LINCOLN — Nearly 70 years after Pvt. Joe Alberico was struck down by a German bullet, a medal lost in the fog of World War II was finally delivered.

In a solemn ceremony Monday at the State Capitol that drew tears from his now 89-year-old widow, a Purple Heart medal and a handful of other military commendations were presented to his family.

“I can't believe this. That's all I can say,” said his widow, Helen Minarik of Elkhorn.

Minarik, then Helen Caniglia, married Alberico two weeks before he shipped out to Europe with the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment in 1944.
