Sriracha plant must cease operations that cause odors, judge rules

Source: LA Times

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge Tuesday ordered a Sriracha hot sauce plant in Irwindale to partially shut down in response to smell complaints from nearby residents.

Judge Robert H. O'Brien ruled in favor of the city and ordered sauce maker Huy Fong Foods to cease any kind of operations that could be causing the odors and make immediate changes that would help mitigate them.

The injunction does not order the company to stop operating entirely, or specify the types of actions that are required.

The city of Irwindale sued Huy Fong Foods on Oct. 21 after nearby residents complained of heartburn, inflamed asthma and even nosebleeds that they said were caused by the spicy odor coming from the hot sauce plant.

Hard to say if you need to stock up. I expect there will either be some sort of agreement that allows production, or the factory will move.

I just went to Amazon and got a double order of their 3 pack <28oz>. Life would be so ordinary without a little spice and I don't plan on running out of my Sriracha.

In the UK similar complaints arise with regard to "noise" from music venues despite some occupiers / neighbours having lived there for far shorter periods of time than the music venues have existed.

A Viet Nam refugee who refuses to sell his company to a big corporation. I wonder if his business rivals are behind this? Sorry, but I am getting more cynical the older I get. I wish him luck.

Huy Fong Foods is in Rosemead...if you do the Google Maps thing you see the problem instantly: there are residential neighborhoods on all four sides of the little industrial patch that contains the tear gas plant.
