Bangladesh fire destroys key garments factory

Source: Globe and Mail/Reuters

A massive blaze apparently set by angry workers swept through a garment factory outside Bangladesh’s capital.

The fire is the latest in a series of incidents – including the collapse of an eight-storey factory that killed more than 1,100 people in April – related to troubles and strife in Bangladesh’s apparel sector.

There were no reports of death or injuries in the fire that was reported Friday at a 10-storey building in Gazipur, 40 kilometres north of Dhaka.

A Reuters photographer on site said burnt garments found at the scene sported brand names from U.S. retailers such as American Eagle Outfitters Inc., Gap Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

The timing couldn't be better in terms of hurting Wal-Mart and the other stores involved.

With the volume of the supply line, we're talking about the spring collection here.

Don't even give workers bathroom breaks: No lunch time: Nasty-ass bosses. Workers can't even buy products they make.

Sabotage: French workers in order to get a break, would throw a shoe into the machinery to stop the production. While the mechanics worked on getting the production up. the workers would take their break.

I was really hoping they wouldn't take a factory collapse that killed MORE THAN A THOUSAND PEOPLE lying down. I'd totally spend $20 on a $10 pair of pants if they were made in a union shop in America, even if they were still the same (pretty crappy) quality.

Keeping crapping on people, and sooner or later they are going to reach their breaking point; everyone has one. Why this kind of thing is not happening here, I don't know.
