Rush Limbaugh Advertiser Sleep Train Pulls Commercials In Wake Of Sandra Fluke 'Slut' Firestorm
Source: Huffington Post
One of Rush Limbaugh's advertisers announced Friday that it was pulling all of its commercials from his radio show in the wake of Limbaugh's incendiary comments about a female law student and contraception.
After being bombarded on Twitter, mattress store Sleep Train said that it would no longer advertise during Limbaugh's top-rated show following days of outrage over Limbaugh's statements about Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown student who was denied a chance to speak at a Congressional hearing about birth control.
"We are pulling our ads with Rush Limbaugh and appreciate the community's feedback," the company wrote in a tweet.
Limbaugh called Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute," saying that she was having "so much sex" that she wanted the government to pay for her contraception. Then, he went further, saying, " if we're going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch."

(26 posts)I just wanted to jump on here and agree with you about what you said about Limbaugh, and more importantly, to agree with your online name and your icon. As the creator of Kelvin Mace, it tickles me no end of pink to see someone using him as an alias. Who are you? How did this happen? Are you someone I actually know in real life, or is this just a character you know about through his extremely rare comic appearances? Kelvin's Daddy is breathless to meet you!

(17,469 posts)I was at a local con this weekend with some old friends I hadn't been to a con with in 15+ years, and just checked my posts now.
I am honored to meet you and am a BIG fan of KM when it came out as a comic and I STILL have issues #1 and #2 which I have passed along for reading to my nieces and nephews over the years.
Back in the 80's I worked in a comic store and wrote a review zine called "Snakes Eye View". When I started posting to various boards (I started here in 2002) it was a name I picked to avoid confusion with DU's founder (Skinner, whose real name is David Allen, as is mine). I went back a few years ago and scanned the comic to create the avatar.
I have occasionally ran into folk who recognize the name (as opposed to thinking I just misspelled "Kevin" and that has always been a treat, but now this it much cooler!
I notice you just signed on to DU, did someone mention my handle or did you stumble across via me via a Google search (My posts here have been linked to quite a bit. and they were tracking around 4th or 5th for the name last time I looked)?
I was a big fan of Stig's Inferno as well!
Glad to see you are still working in comics. Would love to see KM make a comeback.

(26 posts)I stumbled across you because I've been reading Democratic Underground for years and years, it's one of my favourite sites, (along with Crooks and Liars, Talking Points Memo, Smirking Chimp and HuffPo) but I lurk, I don't post. The other day, while scrolling through the responses I saw your avatar and freaked out. Kelvin Mace is one of my more obscure characters and it took me a second to realize it was, in fact, the cover to #2! Glad to hear you're a comic guy. And I'm surprised I hadn't seen this before, as I really do read DU daily (though I have to admit I'm not as thrilled with the new format change. It used to be my primary source for political video clips, now, not so much...).
Nice to meet you electronically.
I'd love to see Mace make a comeback as well, but I'm currently busy as I can be creating some Spider-Man stuff for Marvel and I have a Batman thing coming up. I have four kids and feeding them is a higher priority than publishing the obscure stuff that doesn't have the sales. Though now, apparently, the DU crowd might know who Mace and the Fixer are! Klaus Shoenefeld would have been proud.

(17,469 posts)I toddle around here, DKos, C&L, TPM, AmericaBlog and my own site where I have been posting since 2002.
If you ever get the time to bring Kelvin back, sign me up as a subscriber. I know he is "obscure" but I actually think he was a bit ahead of his time, and current culture might be more friendly toward him.
You might consider re-working him as an online strip, which means you have about 6-8 weeks of material from the first two issues.
Hell, I'd be willing to take a crack at a script for him in that format. I do have some writing cred, and some humor writing chops to boot (see billanddavesro.com, if you wish).
Kelvin was one of the few strips that made me laugh out loud (the other was Cerebus, before Dave Sim lost his mind).
I am digging around in storage this weekend to find my KM's and give them another read.

Now, I have to find Proflowers. I got an answer from there that they don't agree with Limbaugh's views and will communicate my feelings to Limbaugh's sponsors. Not good enough.
I would normally buy flowers for my s-i-l's birthday from them in May. They just lost my business.

(5 posts)Folks -
I know this is off topic, but I wanted to share a couple of websites with DU members that do an excellent job of documenting Freeper lunacy on a daily basis. I hope I haven't broken any rules by jumping in on a thread with different subject matter, but I figured if the topic was Limbaugh...the participants are likely to be solid anti-freepers.
Also - As far as Limbaugh is concerned, let's hope that all of his advertisers get "Komenized" via Twitter and Facebook.

(5,763 posts)What a bad, horrible, melt-down of a year this has been for conservatives. It's marvelous! The entire movement might be collapsing. Among other things, their primaries have shown their now too dumb to count votes. It seems not one day goes by now that one of them doesn't do something crass or dumb, or some scandal doesn't happen, or a key conservative doesn't die . . . or Global Warming isn't demonstrated.
It's beginning to look like a seismic shift. Maybe that Mayan calendar meant something more specific.

I made the call to AutoZone - Best # at the Advertising Dept is: 901-495-7123 for Tracey Houston in Memphis or 901-435-6126 receptionist.
This is essentially what I said::
This is not about freedom of speech, this is about a radio personality's blatant falsehoods and repeated racist remarks over the years. Haven't we all heard enough to know that Rush Limbaugh is NOT the voice of mainstream America? His voice is of the extreme and his main goal is to get rich by saying anything that will fuel hate and frustration by pointing the finger at innocents. That is not the America we want to live in.

(5,113 posts)i think if you hear an ad from them on his show its from the local company not national.
now however if his bigger sponsors where to quit like sleep number already has that will hit him hard. also maybe a complaint should be filed with teh FCC against any local stations broadcasting his show and challanging their licenses since the licensee has to operate in the public interest and his actions speak for themselves.

(2,309 posts)Rush Limbaughs continuing battle with his critics over his attack on a Georgetown law student as a slut and a prostitute has focused largely on several dozen advertisers reported to have pulled away from his radio show.
There has been no serious talk at Premiere Radio Networks the company that syndicates Limbaughs show to more than 600 stations about suspending or otherwise disciplining Americas most popular talk radio host. That's what Premiere management has said.
But that might seem like an unlikely position for the outfit to stake out so unequivocally, since Premiere is a subsidiary of Clear Channel and Clear Channel just last month suspended KFI-AM (640) radio hosts John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou for calling the late Whitney Houston a crack ho. KFI carries both Limbaugh and John & Ken.
The acerbic duo missed seven programs in late February when the Los Angeles station called them out for what management called insensitive and inappropriate comments. Kobylt and Chiampou apologized to their listeners and to Houston's family both before and after their suspension.
Clear Channel-owned KFI also made a series of other pledges to increase sensitivity to minorities at the station, which activists complain features only white hosts. Kobylt and Chiampou agreed to take part in cultural sensitivity training," the station said, "furthering their awareness of the cultural melting pot that is Southern California.
