Glenn Greenwald Vows To Return To U.S. After 'Exile'
Source: TPM
Glenn Greenwald said in an interview published late last week that he intends to return to the United States at some point, admitting that he does "feel a bit on exile."
The Brazil-based American journalist who has reported extensively on top secret surveillance programs revealed through documents leaked by Edward Snowden said he refuses to be kept out of his native country simply for doing his job.
"I do feel a bit on exile but I dont mean to stay away from the US," Greenwald told the website Telerama. "I wanna force the issue at some point. I refuse to be kept out of my own country for doing journalism."
Greenwald originally moved to Brazil as a result of a U.S. law that denied immigration benefits to his gay partner, but that law has since been struck down.

What an insult to people who have really been exiled, who suffer persecution, who can't return to their home countries out of fear for their lives. He says "I refuse to be kept out of my own country for doing journalism" when no one is keeping him out of the country for doing journalism, and before he claimed to live outside of the US due to the lack of gay marriage laws. So, what?

What's the matter Mr. "Journalist"? Break up with the BF and don't want to be a Brazilian any more?
You're not welcome back.

(11,709 posts)An asshole would make sure to stalk every thread about a journalist for the purpose of making immature and hateful comments like a spoiled child having an extended tantrum.
It's a good thing you don't do that, huh?

(67,782 posts)His original stated reason for not living in the US is because of his same sex marriage, but he and his husband can return to the US tomorrow if he really wanted to and there would be no prosecution of them due to their same sex marriage.
More than 15 states have legalized same sex marriage and the DOMA has been struck down by the United States Supreme Court.
Now his REAL reason for not returning to the United States has changed?

(Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin tightened his control over Russia's media on Monday by dissolving the main state news agency and replacing it with an organization that is to promote Moscow's image abroad.
The move to abolish RIA Novosti and create a news agency to be known as Rossiya Segodnya is the second in two weeks strengthening Putin's hold on the media as he tries to reassert his authority after protests against his rule.

(22,000 posts)The problem with that law is it pretty much traps all expats. Property is suppose to be included as well, though I believe your home residence is exempt. If I were to buy a second apartment here in Korea (it is common to own two apartments and rent one out as an investment if you can afford to do so) that might raise me to the level where I'd have to report it. Even a small apartment can run around $150,000. Currently Democrats Abroad is working with NY Senator Kristen Gillibrand to make changes so most expats are exempt,

(176 posts)In fact I think at this point it's naive to assume he could enter the USA without being threatened, harassed, or intimidated by our government.
I'd live in self-imposed exile too if I knew my laptop would be seized and I'd possible be detained upon return.

(176 posts)In fact your New York Daily News source says he intended to pay. Your claim is based on unfounded speculation.
That's for wasting my time. I came to DU because people cared about the truth. Some have let their hatred override their common sense.
It is also speculation that all the laptop seizures and detaining his partner might have intimidated him and other journalists from returning, but it actually has factual backing since loaptops have been seized and his partner detained.
And let's not forget that he's not the only journalist in self-imposed exile - Laura Poitras works from Europe since she can't seem to get into America without getting her laptops seized.

By the way, I think "self-imposed exile" is an oxymoron.
