French president splits with partner after affair

(AFP) – 30 minutes ago

Paris — French President Francois Hollande on Saturday told AFP he has split with his longstanding partner Valerie Trierweiler after his affair with an actress nearly 20 years his junior.

The announcement came after a day of rumours in the French media that Hollande would formally announce the rupture on Saturday, on the eve of a visit by Trierweiler to India for charity work.

Saying he was speaking as a private individual, Hollande announced: "I wish to make it known that I have ended my partnership with Valerie Trierweiler."

Trierweiler, 48, remains holed up in a presidential residence in Versailles outside Paris after leaving hospital last Saturday, where she was treated for a bout of "tiredness" brought on by press revelations of Hollande's affair with 41-year-old actress Julie Gayet.

At his Paris presser a couple of weeks ago he put it this way:

What about the lawsuit he’d threatened against Closer magazine? Because he enjoys presidential immunity, it would be a “double standard” for him to sue, Mr Hollande replied. Yet, he added, “my indignation is total. And I mean total.”

From a couple of days after that press conference:

On Thursday, Gayet initiated a civil law suit for violation of privacy against Closer magazine over its report.

Gayet is seeking 50,000 euros in damages and 4,000 euros in legal costs from the magazine over last week's report, which she claims breached France's privacy legislation. If she wins, Closer will have to publish the legal verdict on its cover page.

Life truth: have an affair with someone who is already living with/married to someone else, don't be shocked when he/she does the same thing to you.

I read a statistic one time that said that upwards of 90% of relationships that started as a result of infidelity (a married man divorcing his wife to marry his mistress, for example) end in divorce. If he cheated on her to be with you, what makes you think he won't cheat on you to be with someone else down the road?

Just another guy doing the thinking with his little head. Hollande should worry a little more about the French economy and a little less about juggling two women at once.

On the other hand, Trierweiler is reaping what she sowed. She didn't think twice about Segolene Royal (who is the mother of Hollande's four children) when she got involved with him. Segolene is the one who should have been president anyway. Unfortunately, she lost to Sarkozy. That's when Hollande chose to run. Segolene still has wide support and many French hope that she runs again in the future (my brother and SIL think that she's great).

As Wendy Williams says, how you get him is how you lose him. Whenever someone breaks up another person's relationship and then has that person cheat on them I think about Wendy Williams' quote.
