`Oh, not again': Northeast is hit by another storm

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Yet another storm paralyzed the Northeast with heavy snow and sleet Thursday, giving the winter-weary that oh-no-not-again feeling, while hundreds of thousands across the ice-encrusted South waited in the cold for the electricity to come back on.
At least 21 deaths were blamed on the treacherous weather, including that of a pregnant woman struck by a mini-snowplow in a New York City parking lot as she loaded groceries into her car.
The sloppy mix of snow and face-stinging sleet grounded more than 6,500 flights and closed schools and businesses as it made its way up the heavily populated Interstate 95 corridor, where shoveling out has become a weekly - sometimes twice-weekly - chore.
"Snow has become a four-letter word," lamented Tom McGarrigle, a politician in suburban Philadelphia.

(111,292 posts)a conveyor belt of snow that would dump anywhere from 3 inches to a foot. The light snowfalls would obscure deep puddles of black slush barely skinned over with new snow and stepping into one was a daily disaster and by the time the shift was over and my feet were finally dry, it was time to go home and do it all over again.
The northeast has been spoiled by too many mild winters. This year looks like what used to be normal there. I'm glad I left if things are getting back to normal.

(5,946 posts)I kept up with it until the slush - we got 4 inches of slush that was too heavy to shovel, my snowblower could not handle it, it ended up as solid Ice. haven't moved the car since then. My neighbors have all dug out, but I have not seen any of them, I guess they figure retired people have no where to go.

But then again...our disastrous drought continues. Trees and plants ("drought resistant" are dying.

(2,983 posts)Supposed to get up to 18 inches between tonight and Saturday. Glad I get to stay at the hotel I work at. The roads are going to be ugly - and our budget for snow removal (and the town budget, too) have been cut to shreds by our republican governor. Not fun. Still, it could be worse. The coast is supposed to get more freezing rain than snow, I think. I'll take the snow.

(795 posts)Yes, it snowed a few hours... in suburban Boston.
OK, so snow fell three hours. It's very pretty. We shoveled our walk--good exercise. Onr neighbor (25 and 38 yr olds) was lazy and DIDN'T shovel her sidewalk. Busses ran all day. One idiot left his car on the street--and it got towed away about 1:30. Properly so.
The roads are clear and there is light drizzle. Nothing significant--so much for much hype.

(7,237 posts)I got 18" in 24 hours in suburban Philadelphia (on top of the foot that was already there), and some of us have 200 foot driveways to shovel, not just a quaint little "walk".
(And oh look, the article is from PHILADELPHIA, not BOSTON.)
"Hype" my ass.

(26,060 posts)doesn't mean shit to the rest of us. Here in NYC we got around a foot - north of the city, where I live, it's closer to 18". And it snowed all morning and into the early afternoon so no idea what you're talking about there. Then we got another 3 inches overnight.
