Centrist Women Tell of Disenchantment With G.O.P.

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by dixiegrrrrl (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: The New York Times

As baby showers go, the party Mary Russell attended to celebrate her niece’s first child was sweet, with about a dozen women offering congratulations over ice cream and cake.

But somewhere between the baby name game and the gifts, what had been light conversation took a sharp turn toward the personal and political — specifically, the battle over access to birth control and other women’s health issues that have sprung to life on the Republican campaign trail in recent weeks.

“We all agreed that this seemed like a throwback to 40 years ago,” said Ms. Russell, 57, a retired teacher from Iowa City who describes herself as an evangelical Christian and “old school” Republican of the moderate mold. Until the baby shower, just two weeks ago, she had favored Mitt Romney for president.

Not anymore. She said she might vote for President Obama now. “I didn’t realize I had a strong viewpoint on this until these conversations,” Ms. Russell said. As for the Republican presidential candidates, she added: “If they’re going to decide on women’s reproductive issues, I’m not going to vote for any of them. Women’s reproduction is our own business.”

I guess the 'war on women' is working.....at driving them away from the Republican Party.

The "old school" republican has been gone for decades, and that it took her this long to realize that the party she belongs to is NOT the party of Eisenhower only says she has been living in a bubble for quite some time

The republican party platform has for some time said they want to control women's reproductive health

I can almost bet that if romney gets the nomination, and then bullshits like bush did, saying that "reasonable people disagree on this issue", she will fall hook line and sinker right back to the repukes

Why any self respecting women or minority would be a republican today doesn't say much about them

The new dem party appeals to moderate conservatives more than their batshit crazy party. They will start flocking to our party, which resembles the repub party of the 50s more than it does the dem party of the 60s.

The liberals will be without a voice. It will be right vs extreme right.

...which is why I've left the party after more than three decades of activism. imo liberals can get more action working as indies from outside the party.

Of course I'll still vote for Pres. Obama, as the lesser of evils - FAR lesser this year.

There is nothing in the TOS that says you have to support the Democratic Party, just the Democratic candidates.

In 2008 I voted for a third party Presidential candidate and he won. If more people would do that the Democrats would start going back toward the left.

Today's "Democratic" party would be unrecognizable to my grandfathers, who were union organizers back in the '30s and '40's.

have got to know that if the current crop of GOP men and women running for office tries to change their message from attacks on women rights to backing off these statements that they are lying to them. They will say anything to get elected.

Go ahead, Rush. Call her a slut. Tell us she's a prostitute, that she shouldn't be allowed near children. Dwindle female support for the GOP down to just Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann and other women damaged beyond repair.

Maybe the Pope will even chime in on it and say don't use birth control, homosexual marriage will bring the world to Hell, and send us more kids.

Decades of the GOP kicking down at the poor, minorities, gays, and women that weren't them didn't shift them. Let the GOP take a whack at them though, and suddenly it's time to start thinking about civil rights. Complete and utter lack of empathy.
