Los Angeles Bishop Kept Altar Boy List From Police
Source: Associated Press
When Los Angeles police were investigating allegations of child abuse by a Roman Catholic priest in 1988, they asked for a list of altar boys at the last parish where the priest worked. Archbishop Roger Mahony told a subordinate not to give the list, saying he didn't want the boys to be scarred by the investigation and that he felt the altar boys were too old to be potential victims, according to a deposition made public Wednesday. The detectives investigating allegations against Nicolas Aguilar Rivera, a visiting Mexican priest, ultimately got the names of the boys from parish families. They determined the priest molested at least 26 boys during his 10 months in Los Angeles, according to the priest's confidential archdiocese file and police records made public by attorneys for the victims. Twenty-five of the alleged victims were altar boys and the 26th was training with the priest to be one, said Anthony DeMarco, a plaintiff attorney. It's not clear what impact Mahony's action had on the investigation, though at the time police complained that the archdiocese wasn't fully cooperating. <more> Read more: http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/california/SD-Los-Angeles-Bishop-Kept-Altar-Boy-List-From-Police-246140451.html?akmobile=o&nms=y

7. Probably Working, grocery shopping, doing house choirs, cooking, and 100+ things that parents do.
Stop blaming the parents! Parents never find out that their children are sexually abused or about to get abused in real time. Kids won't tell because they are ashamed/scared...and they lie. The only %100 prevention that your child won't get bullied, sexually abused, use drugs, become a teenage parent, or commit a crime is birth control. Only the most arrogant parents think they monitor or control their children's entire lives. |

8. The parents must share a great deal of the blame. Why did they trust their children to
a priest? Would they do the same for a Boy Scout leader or soccer coach or a clown? They used extremely bad judgement. And what did they do when they found out? Pray for the priest? The Church teaches that you are to obey and trust the priests because God wants it. And I guess if your children get abused, then God wanted it. What the Church doesnt want is free thinking perishers.

9. My church had a much smaller problem with a youth leader who let the kids do what they wanted.
The parents were watching, communicating with each other and put an end to the irresponsible person's supervision of the young people.
Parents are responsible for their children first and foremost. I suspect that the parents were afraid to say anything about a priest. I can understand if one parent has a problem communicating with his child but all parents in such a large group? The parents were afraid to criticize a priest. That's my guess. |

10. "Parents are responsible for their children first and foremost." Absolutely.
I think the Church makes a mistake in teaching perishers that priests are a higher level human being, closer to God. Therefore, I think the parents in many cases give too much trust to the priests. But it's important to the ideology to teach such. IMO the church would rather put up with a few million cases of child molestation than change their ideology.

6. Is the Catholic Church exempt from the law?
Why doesn't the RICO Act apply here? Where is FBI? CIA? Special Forces? This is a worldwide pedophile ring. |
