Russian spy ship docked in Havana
Source: yahoo news
Havana (AFP) - A Russian warship was docked in Havana Wednesday, without explanation from Communist Cuba or its state media.
The Viktor Leonov CCB-175 boat, measuring 91.5 meters (300 feet) long and 14.5 meters wide, was docked at the port of Havana's cruise ship area, near the Russian Orthodox Cathedral.
The Vishnya, or Meridian-class intelligence ship, which has a crew of around 200, went into service in the Black Sea in 1988 before it was transferred seven years later to the northern fleet, Russian media sources said.
Neither Cuban authorities nor state media have mentioned the ship's visit, unlike on previous tours by Russian warships.

(9,560 posts)to open up a few overseas naval bases. He's mentioned Vietnam, The Seychelles, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Singapore. We'll see. I only saw the story because I googled something else about their navy, so I'm so sure if the statement was purely for domestic consumption.
He said the same thing back in July 2012.

Hope they won't get in the road of the insane hostilities the US has been conducting against that small country all these long years, going back even to the 1800's.
How thoughtful to shoot the scary news to us so quickly.

(2,178 posts)..just beyond the 12 Mile Limit. They were monitoring communications from Pease AFB and the Subs coming in and out of the Navy Yard. A fisherman I knew said they would go out to it and trade Booze and cigarettes to the crew. No big deal and the crew were friendly. I think it was called the Remora, after the fish that attach themselves to Sharks and Whales.

(2,952 posts)...in 1990. It was flanked by a destroyer and a frigate who attempted to harass us when we hit the 12 mile point....followed us for a day, criss crossed our bow at distances of less than 300 yards(that's bumper to bumper traffic in open ocean btw...) we gave them the bird a lot, they returned the favor, they pointed their guns at us and we had torpedoes in the tubes. We finally dove and lost them pretty fast after that. The destroyer and the frigate were pretty scary looking, but their asw systems weren't very hot....good old fun from the Cold War days....
