Paula Deen: I’m like ‘that black football player who recently came out’

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by uppityperson (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Raw Story

Former Food Network star Paula Deen compared herself to gay pro football prospect Michael Sam in an interview with People Magazine, the E! Network reported on Wednesday.

“I feel like ‘embattled’ or ‘disgraced’ will always follow my name,” Deen reportedly told People. “It’s like that black football player who recently came out. He said, ‘I just want to be known as a football player. I don’t want to be known as a gay football player.’ I know exactly what he’s saying.”

.......

In the interview, scheduled for publication on Friday, Deen also issued another public apology for her behavior, while suggesting she got less of a fair shake than another media personality, Duck Dynasty‘s Phil Robertson, who was briefly suspended after anti-LGBT and racially-inflammatory remarks of his were published by GQ Magazine.

“It’s amazing that some people are given passes and some people are crucified,” Deen was quoted as saying. “I have new empathy for these situations, though. My dad always told me, ‘Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.’”

she does not realize how or why certain things are offensive or just not on the same level.

so even if it's true that the duck dynasty asshole was given a pass and she wasn't, she is still not on the same level as the gay football player.

Paula was "crucified" due to her bigotry. Epic fail in analogy.

I believe as a gay man, the following is going to happen in the future because I have heard a ton of straight people using the word: what is going to happen in 30 years when people ask "have you ever said the word "faggot" in your life? We may have thousands of Paul Deans in the future. People are so stupid for using the word "faggot" but decide today that it is not right to say it but still have it in their history. Paula used the word over 30 years ago and had this wrath. I think a lot of straight people will have that too later on. I have heard the word "faggot" so many times that politicians will be asked and perhaps disqualified to run later on.

I'm quite sure "that black gay football player" doesn't feel either embattled or disgraced. He's just living his life. With class and grace and honesty.

And people are telling him "right on."

How she could even TRY that comparison on for size is beyond me. No shame!

lol, but she does show how many people really are just ignorant sometimes. She thinks that if she doesn't say the N word, that she has not said something racist. That if she doesn't say homo or fag that she has not been offensive. It will take some of us longer than others to get it the full picture. But it is a start.

She is gonna be worse than getting an older man to stop calling women honey. Racism and bigotry is part of her makeup. It will take some scrubbing to remove it.

Yes, she is just like "that black gay football player"

34. The Advice She Needs
Thu Feb 27, 2014, 10:32 AM
Feb 2014

Someone needs to tell her to stop talking and just cook. Also, someone needs to tell her to stop trying to play the victim. Her problem is that that she has been treated differently than anyone else; it is that she did not just apologize and move on with her life. She gave her apology, but then she blamed everyone except herself.

I think her biggest mistake was going on the Today Show and claiming she used the n-word because a black man had robbed the bank at which she worked and black youth in her restaurant had used the word. She also made the claim that the only reason the issue had been brought up was because people wanted what she had. I think if she had just apologized, without blaming others, and asked to move on she would have whethered the scandal better. However, she is doing really well, at this point, considering the deal she recently signed.
