Man charged with neglect after young son fires rifle, killing 13-year-old boy

Source: FOX 59 News/Indianapolis, IN.

GREENSBURG, Ind. (March 21, 2014)—The father of a 6-year-old boy who fired a gunshot that fatally struck his 13-year-old half-brother has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Jason Forshee, 34, was taken into custody on charges of Neglect of a Dependent Child Resulting in Death, a Class A felony, and Dangerous Control of a Child, a Class C felony.

On March 11, Greensburg police responded to a house in the 1000 block of North Carver Street in reference to a person shot. When officers arrived, they located 13-year-old Craig Roberts suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Forshee said he set his rifle on a table in the living room in order to clean it. He told authorities he removed the magazine, but he did not realize there was still a bullet in the chamber. He said he left the firearm unattended for just 10-15 seconds when he heard a “pop,” stated court documents. During that time, Forshee’s 6-year-old son fired the weapon, striking Roberts.

But at the same time they should be aware of the (statistical) risks.

I'm sure she's not thinking about the innocent gun which never should have been there in proximity to two children. I'm sure she'll never be thinking about that for the rest of her life.

That 6 year old now not only has the guilt of killing his brother, but if the dad goes to prison, he could feel responsible for that too.

People are so frikking stupid! I would love to see stats on how many people are killed/wounded by the bullet that no one knew was in the 'empty' gun.

That 6 year old didn't just reach over and pull the trigger as it laid on the table. That kid picked it up, shouldered it, aimed it, and pulled the trigger.

left it unattended for 10-15 seconds my ASS. 15 seconds doesn't allow for a kid to approach it, pick it up, take aim, and fire it.

They always like to take the gun out of the equation, and they think if the gun wasn't there, the same outcome would have happened. I wrote a list of people getting killed by guns, and one of them told me that if that person really wanted to kill the victim, they would have done so regardless of what they had. So in their minds, Michael Dunn could have punched his way into Jordan Davis's SUV and hit him to death.

They also make this dumb analogy: I can kill you with other things, so should we ban those things? One of them said he can throw me in an oven or toss me off a skyscraper, so should we ban ovens and skyscrapers? Gee, I didn't know ovens and skyscrapers could be concealed and carried, and fire pieces of metal faster than the speed of sound several times that are designed to bounced around in your body causing maximum damage. Can't argue with logic like that!

Mar 2014

The 6 year old had handled the rifle earlier when there was a visitor at the home. He had also pointed it at a neighborhood girl through a window.

He told the police that his dad had let him hold it before.

"I didn't know there was a bullet, I didn't mean to shoot my brother."

How sad.
