Italy rescues 4,000 migrants in 48 hours in escalating crisis

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Italy has rescued 4,000 migrants from boats trying to reach European shores in the past 48 hours in a deepening immigration crisis, the interior minister said on Wednesday.

Better sea conditions and turmoil in Libya, grappling with chaos and rampant militias three years after the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi, have increased the numbers risking the perilous sea journey from North Africa to try to reach Europe.

"The emergency is getting worse and there is no halt to the boats arriving," Interior Minister Angelino Alfano told state-owned RAI radio. "This issue is serious and Europe must take it in hand, immediately, because this is not a Mediterranean border but a European border."

Rome has repeatedly urged the European Union to take a greater role in policing the seas as two-thirds of migrants who reach Italy travel onwards to other countries in the region. The interior minister said 15,000 migrants had arrived in Italy by sea since the start of 2014.

Because I pay taxes in Italy . Married a man from there and we live in the US - the rest of the family is there. Many of these souls are being absorbed into Calabria - but that's like Mississippi trying to absorb refugees - a poor region that lacks resources.

No one is whining about it there - but they need help financially. Other Euroean countries are not accepting forwards and when they do - these people ended up trapped in detention centers. The southern most region of Italy can use the people due to the migration North and abroad (US, Canada, Austraia, Germany) of its young "brawn".

But they need food, clothing, and shelter (health care isn't an issue - your sick there you see a doctor regardless of your staus - you are a human being) to be able to be productive.

If they were trapped on the continent of Africa - the UN would find a way to provide relief. Calabria needs help. The poorest people in Italy in my experience - are the kindest. It is what it is as my father in law has said on this issue. But they are "poor" there and need help getting these folks the most basic needs as human beings.

And don't think for one minute they stay "detained". If you want out - those people are defiant of the "state" - they aren't paying one bit of attention to again quote my father in law The Saint (his name is Santo ) - those dandy boys in suits in Rome are trying to tell Calabria what to do.

And understand you have a jackasses in the North and in Venice that resent their OWN people - let alone newcomers fleeing the destruction. This is one hot humanitarian mess that could be solved on the far end (refugees) with a little bit of money.
