Magnitude-6.0 quake near Tokyo; report says trains temporarily stopped

Source: AP-Faux News

TOKYO – A magnitude-6.0 earthquake has struck near Tokyo, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit at 2018 GMT, or early Monday morning local time.

The earthquake was located 61 miles (98 kilometers) south of Tokyo and at a depth of 96 miles.

Japan's Kyodo News service reports that all of Tokyo's subway systems were briefly stopped after the quake, and it cites operator Tokyo Metro as saying delays were just 10 minutes.

6.2 quake rocks Tokyo area, no reported damage or injuries

A 6.2 earthquake struck Tokyo early Monday morning, with the epicenter 160 kilometers below the seabed in Izu Oshima Island. The Japan Meteorological Agency said that the tremor, which hit the area at around 5:18 AM local time, registered lower 5 in the seismic intensity scale of 7 in Chiyoda Ward, central Tokyo, while the US Geological Survey said it had a magnitude of 5.8 and a depth of 156 kilometers.

There has been no reported injuries nor damage to any property in Japan’s capital, although the earthquake was powerful enough to have shaken buildings in the city. Officials also assured the public that there was no immediate danger of a tsunami warning, which is always a big concern in a country like Japan and especially after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami which wreaked havoc in the eastern part of the country. Another concern would be the safety conditions at nuclear plants that are affected by the quake. Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), the operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant that suffered a meltdown during the 2011 disasters, said that they did not detect any abnormal activity at the plant.
