Ted Cruz: Christians Shouldn’t Be Required To Do Business With Gay People
Source: The Raw Story
Christian business owners should be able to discriminate against LGBT people and others if they believe the Bible tells them to, said US Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX). Everyone has to reconcile their own faith with how they interact with others, and thats a choice youve got to make based on your understanding of biblical teachings and based on the best understanding you can come to it, Cruz said at a Houston Baptist University Forum on Faith in the Public Square.
The Tea Party favorite said Christians should not be forced to sell wedding cakes to same-sex couples or photograph their marriage ceremonies, although he personally had no problem doing so although conceded he was a terrible cook. Im very much a believer that the scripture teaches that you hate the sin and love the sinner, and so, you know, from my perspective I am perfectly willing to interact with anybody, he said. Look, I work in the U.S. Congress. But at the same time, I dont think the law should be forcing Americans to violate their religious faith.
Cruz offered a pending legal case as an example. The Obama administration is litigating against the Little Sisters of the Poor, trying to force them, trying to extract millions of dollars of fines to force them to pay for contraceptives and abortion-providing drugs for others, he said. The U.S. Supreme Court issued an order several hours before Cruz made his remarks, keeping in place a temporary injunction shielding the charity and other religious groups from the requirement to offer contraception as part of employee health benefits.
Now, these Catholic nuns dont want to do so, and the idea that the federal government would be going after Catholic nuns, trying to force them to violate their religious faith, really demonstrates how utterly unmoored we have come from the constitutional liberties this country was founded on, Cruz said. Religious groups may opt out of the contraception mandate by filling out a form to require their insurers pay for such coverage, but the Catholic groups argued in their lawsuit that this effectively forced them to take part in the transaction.

37 Then the righteous* will answer him and say, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?
38 When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?
39 When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?
40 And the king will say to them in reply, Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.
41 Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,

Should Catholics be allowed to turn away people only because they are Jewish? That would be an interesting sign in the window.

Places like the Hobby Lobby have to post a sign if they don't allow concealed firearms in the store, why shouldn't they also be required to prominently post others who aren't welcome.
It'd be something to see a wedding photographer's friendly looking ad in the Yellow Pages and a mandatory notice at the bottom listing those who need not call. That way they can't pick & choose on a a case by case basis. Many resturants and bars could use the religious loophole to refuse serving black people because they "suspected" they may have been homosexual.

(1,407 posts)I will never ever offer my services to known racists and bigots such as Westboro or the KKK and I would legally fight any attempts to force me to either do so or be fined/forced out of business. So to be consistent in my views, I feel that a business owner can/should be able to choose who they offer their services to based on whatever they choose. I see it as similar to the 1st Amendment which protects even offensive and incorrect speech. And if some a-hole wants to deny services based on their own bigoted views then publicize it loudly to the community, who can then shut the business down by not patronizing it.
7962
(11,841 posts)Which is also why I cant stand seeing people being shouted down while trying to give a speech, even if its someone I dont approve of. And I'm ashamed that some here allow him to do that. I am a Christian as are many of my gay friends, and we resent both of these attitudes. My beliefs (I hate the word religion) are based on one thing: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Even if you don't believe that this was the ultimate teaching of Christ, doesn't it meet the criteria of a better world? Screw the biblical bullshit! This is what we as Christians have been taught to be the bottom line.
Sadly, "Religion" has tacked on amendments to this one very basic rule.

It's not about honoring women.
What it IS about is Old Testament blood sacrifice and a string of ancient prohibitions that most Jewish people don't take seriously anymore, like menstruating women being put out of the house as an abomination; putting to death women who left their husbands, although men could put out their wives without consequence, et al. It's sick stuff. And apparently it makes people cray-cray.
The teachings of Jesus are hard to follow; so in order to be good Christians, they put the emphasis on fear and loathing.

I have had to ponder how to answer...
This could get difficult and I don't want to go into a discussion of Christianity. But..
I would say that REAL 'real' Christians, are those who try to live their lives as Jesus taught, or perhaps according to what was written by those who wrote about what they say he taught. They are the ones who really ponder the meaning of those teachings, those ideas, who have an actual intentional spiritual practice. Thomas Merton comes to mind.
Then there are the everyday 'real' Christians who have...a strong 'belief' in.. something, and try to live their lives well and with respect.
And then there are the Ted Cruzes of the world. people as psychologically disturbed as the Taliban. There is a quite wide range of these deranged beings.
There are fewest by far of the first. As to the second and third... I certainly would think, and HOPE, there are more of the second. A lot more.
olddad56
(5,732 posts)by far, I think anyone who takes the bible literally rather than figuratively, including preachers, would seem like fake christians to me. But that would not keep me for having friends that I felt were fake christians, providing they didn't try to lay their trip on me.
I think anyone who hates anyone else is not a real christian and is not very spiritual. If a person calls themselves a true christian and won't do business will someone because of their sexual preference, color of their skin, spiritual beliefs, political beliefs, etc. then I would consider that person as not true to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Like who would Jesus hate?
I don't consider myself a christian, real or fake. I do consider myself a spiritual person. I certainly believe in God and a life after this one. And I don't really buy the literal notion of a heaven and a hell. Those concepts exist in our minds and we make our own heaven or hell right here in this lifetime.
Just my opinion.

If his Christian vision of Sharia Law were in effect, one of three things must occur. Either all the straight (or pretend straight) people register to receive an ID proving they are heterosexual in order to do business with Angry Closet Boy and his fellow members of the Kloset Klan, the state requires homosexual people to self identify with some sort of visual cue (such as a pink triangle sewn on a shirt (ah the good ol' days for Cruz), or the state allows anyone to mistreat anyone if they just happen to think the other person is gay.
I think men should start aggressively asking Ted to stop looking at their crotches. At every public appearance, a man should say something to the effect of, "Sen. Cruz, I have a question. How is the gover...excuse me Senator, my eyes are up here. I would appreciate it if you would stop looking at my crotch. It is not for you."
Do this often enough, and he will eventually respond with, "I wasn't looking at your crotch."
