OHIO SCHOOLS CHIEF ACCUSED OF DESTROYING EVIDENCE

CLEVELAND (AP) The superintendent of the eastern Ohio district where two high school football players were found guilty of rape in a high-profile case last year wiped computer hard drives, erased emails and lied to investigators about his knowledge of the allegations against the boys, newly released court documents say.
The filing Thursday came in the case against Steubenville superintendent Michael McVey, 51, who has pleaded not guilty to felony counts of tampering with evidence and obstructing justice, and misdemeanor counts of falsification and obstructing official business.
The charges stem from an investigation of McVey's actions after he learned of the allegations in 2012 made by a 16-year-old West Virginia girl against the two members of the storied Steubenville High football team, one of whom was the team's quarterback. The teens eventually were found guilty in juvenile court and were sent to youth detention centers and classified as sex offenders.
The case drew national attention in part because of the role of texting and social media in exposing the attack, which led to allegations that authorities were covering up the actions of football players.

(2,004 posts)Mike Dewine, Ohio's incredibly corrupt Attorney General, is running for re-election this year. He used this tragedy to generate some positive media attention when he first inserted himself into the case. Meanwhile, he fought against LGBT rights, women's rights and helped suppress the vote in outrageous fashion while handing out millions of dollars in payola to his campaign donors and failing to protect Ohio citizens from corrupt corporations.
In addition, Jefferson County, where Steubenville is located, is a Democratic leaning area and this is a way for Dewine and the GOP to punish all the people there, by dragging this out for as long as possible. The GOP in Ohio are incredibly vindictive.
I am not defending the people involved, just trying to give a little perspective as to why this has hit the news now. This should have been taken care of a long time ago for justice to be served, if what is alleged is factual. Please be very careful in evaluating the situation. We need to watch out for cynical media manipulation. The community needed to do soul searching and self analysis as to why this was allowed to occur while no one, adult or teenager, had the intestinal fortitude to stop the crime. By using the case for political ends, Dewine prevented that needed analysis.
I hope the victim in this case has gotten all the assistance and care she needs to heal and recover from this horrid crime. Seems that by dragging this out unnecessarily, it is just more abuse of the victim. All the best to the brave young lady and her family for stepping forward. Good luck to them.

(22,000 posts)I see the others involved (the adults) are getting off with little or no punishment. I would be shocked if anyone serves a substantial amount of time from this case.

(55,445 posts)And this wasn't the first "Steubenville" nor was it the last...We mainly know about it because it was such a brazen and sloppy cover-up that quickly unraveled, and the perps were bold enough to document their involvement on social media...
