U.S. investigates reports of American suicide bomber in Syria

U.S. government agencies were examining social media postings purporting to show how an American who was fighting with an Al Qaeda affiliate blew himself up recently in a suicide attack in northern Syria, U.S. officials said.
The officials, who declined to be identified, said U.S. agencies assessed that the postings were likely authentic. One said some investigators believed they knew the "U.S. person's" true identity, but declined to give further details.*
According to internet postings, the suicide bomber, who called himself "Abu Hurayra al-Amriki" carried out one of four suicide bombings on May 25 in Syria's Idlib province on behalf of Jabhat al-Nusra, al Qaeda's affiliate fighting to oust the government of President Bashar al Assad.
If his identity is confirmed, he would be the first American known to have committed a suicide bombing in Syria on behalf of al Qaeda, said Laith Alkhouri, a senior analyst with Flashpoint Global Partners, which monitors militant websites for government and private clients.

(3,746 posts)An American citizen carried out a suicide bombing in Syria on behalf of an al Qaeda-linked militant group on Sunday, apparently the first time a U.S. citizen has carried out such an attack in the Syrian civil war, U.S. law enforcement and counterterrorism officials tell NBC News.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the suicide bombing and said they have identified the American. They declined to release his identity or hometown.
Word of the Americans death in the suicide bombing first surfaced Tuesday in tweets from the al-Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-linked group fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
The tweets identified the bomber only by his Arabic nom de guerre, Abu Hurayra al-Amriki, (Abu Hurayra the American) and said he carried out one of four suicide bombings of Syrian government sites in Jabal al-Arbaa'in in Idlib Province -- the scene of heavy fighting in recent weeks and months.

(37,449 posts)U.S. officials on Friday revealed what they believe is the name of an American citizen from Florida who was involved in a suicide bombing last weekend in Syria.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they cannot be 100 percent certain that Moner Mohammad Abusalha was the man killed in a bombing in Syria because the U.S. has no access to fingerprints, DNA, or dental records.
However, officials say, investigators have spoken with his relatives in Florida and have shown them photos of the man who was said to be involved in the bombing, and the relatives believe it's him.
Other U.S. officials said they have confirmed reports from jihadi sources that Abusalha was a Palestinian American.
