Benghazi Suspect Said He Was Moved To Take Revenge For American-Made Video

Source: Huffington Post

"What he did in the period just before the attack has remained unclear. But Mr. Abu Khattala told other Libyans in private conversations during the night of the attack that he was moved to attack the diplomatic mission to take revenge for an insult to Islam in an American-made online video.
An earlier demonstration venting anger over the video outside the American Embassy in Cairo had culminated in a breach of its walls, and it dominated Arab news coverage. Mr. Abu Khattala told both fellow Islamist fighters and others that the attack in Benghazi was retaliation for the same insulting video, according to people who heard him."

BENGHAZI, Libya — Witnesses and the authorities have called Ahmed Abu Khattala one of the ringleaders of the Sept. 11 attack on the American diplomatic mission here. But just days after President Obama reasserted his vow to bring those responsible to justice, Mr. Abu Khattala spent two leisurely hours on Thursday evening at a crowded luxury hotel, sipping a strawberry frappe on a patio and scoffing at the threats coming from the American and Libyan governments.

Libya’s fledgling national army is a “national chicken,” Mr. Abu Khattala said, using an Arabic rhyme. Asked who should take responsibility for apprehending the mission’s attackers, he smirked at the idea that the weak Libyan government could possibly do it. And he accused the leaders of the United States of “playing with the emotions of the American people” and “using the consulate attack just to gather votes for their elections.”

Mr. Abu Khattala’s defiance — no authority has even questioned him about the attack, he said, and he has no plans to go into hiding — offered insight into the shadowy landscape of the self-formed militias that have come to constitute the only source of social order in Libya since the fall of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi.

A few, like the militia group Ansar al-Shariah that is linked to Mr. Abu Khattala and that officials in Washington and Tripoli agree was behind the attack, have embraced an extremist ideology hostile to the West and nursed ambitions to extend it over Libya. But also troubling to the United States is the evident tolerance shown by other militias allied with the government, which have so far declined to take any action against suspects in the Benghazi attack.

"I hate Barack Obama because he is Black and for absolutely no other reason at all"

"Anything he does I will oppose no matter how absurd I look doing it"

Say that 2000 times and you will be getting the feel for it...

Let me make it clear I am not speaking of any particular person on DU, I am speaking only of people who instantly find something wrong with anything and everything directly, indirectly or remotely connected to Black President.

Vast majority of these people are rightys and wont be found on DU or if so not for long, there are a few who claim to be Democrats or liberals who do this but very few.

Everyone knows the region and many of the people
are volatile. Everyone knows Islamic fundamentalists
believe in violently defending their imaginary repressive
& violent god.

So what is the purpose of these right-wing provocations,
like the video, the koran-burnings, if not to incite violence?

And to point out that the video was a trigger.. ? but no, it
was a coverup. Of anything, whatever. Because Obama, and
now Hillary! Sheesh.

If you read Clinton's entire statement that has the "what difference does it make?" statement, she is saying essentially the same thing.

I really don't get the Republican's hysteria over this comment. Our interests, embassies, consulates have been attacked in that neck of the woods for decades. There are people who hate us for a variety of reasons, perceived disrespect to Mohammed is just one of them.

and one of their major accusations is that the video had nothing to do with the attacks. They accused Obama, Hillary and Susan Rice of lying about the video. They further accused them of making up the story about the video because it was politically expedient (Obama was up for reelection).

Well, there it is, out of the horse's mouth. The video DID influence their decision to attack the mission in Benghazi (it wasn't a full fledged consulate yet). That video was mentioned as the reason that there were protests in Cairo, Tunisia and Yemen.

Ahmed Abu Khattala has been hiding in front of various TV news cameras and walking the street of his home town, in other words, in deep cover. A now he gets a nice long boat trip through the Mediterranean and then across the Atlantic. Sort of reminds one of Bowe Bergdahl and his family reunion.
