Washington, United States: A "profoundly troubled" United States condemned reports Saturday that an American teenager detained in Israel was "severely beaten" while in police custody, amid heightened tensions with Palestinians.
The parents of Tariq Abu Khder, a 15-year-old cousin of a Palestinian youth murdered earlier this week, have told AFP that their son was arrested in Shuafat after being beaten by police on Thursday during his holiday stay in the area.
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States "strongly condemn(s) any excessive use of force," referring to the alleged beating.
Clashes have erupted in recent days, sparked by the abduction and murder of Tariq's cousin Mohammed Abu Khder, 16, as autopsy reports showed he was burned alive.

(25,699 posts)It's nice that the US is very suddenly "profoundly disturbed" by Israel doing exactly what it's been doing the entire fucking time.

It strikes me that there's some enabling going on here -- or maybe the proper word is co-dependency. In either case, if we're really Israel's friend, we need to look them in the eye and tell them they have to give up this shit.

(10,650 posts)What does that mean? Nothing. Congress will probably increase the Israeli subsidy at the next opportunity.
If there was a measure in the United Nations to condemn Israel for this beating, the US would veto it. That's how profoundly troubled we are.

(3,595 posts)Someone beaten while in police custody. Sure glad that doesn't happen here. (If I knew where to find the symbols, I'd put sarcasm here).
I wish we were more "profoundly troubled" by what goes on here.

(2,682 posts)Is that what, DefCon 1 of diplomacy. Why not say we are profoundly upset, that must be a notch above, donchathink?
What pisses me off is that the US holds a most powerful weapon over Israel. MONEY. Why won't we use this most persuasive factor to obtain peaceful compromises? What can they do to us if we withheld some cash, a few fighter aircraft, some loan guarantees, bullets! We have what it would take to resolve the violence but for some reason (Jewish voting block?) we are afraid to us it.

Who could do this to a person? What kind of monster could burn his cousin after tormenting him?
He must have people who have some kind of influence in getting his story made public. I'm glad for that. I hope they won't be retaliated against for daring to mention the truth of his situation.
