(Reuters) - Russia should boost its arms exports to help the industry upgrade and add more high-end jobs to the labor market, President Vladimir Putin was quoted as saying on Monday.
Russia is the focus of military tensions with the West over its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. It has also been a long-standing arms supplier to Syria and ally of President Bashar al-Assad, who opposition forces are seeking to oust.
"It is important to... strengthen Russia's presence on global arms markets," RIA news agency quoted Putin as telling a meeting on military cooperation with foreign countries.
"Beyond doubt, this should help national defense industries to plan for an expansion and update of production, (and) create new quality jobs."...

(42,239 posts)MOSCOW, March 17 (RIA Novosti) The United States and Russia combined supplied over half of all arms exports worldwide in the past five years, according to new data on the industry compiled by a European think tank.
The US topped the list of arms exporting countries, accounting for 29 percent of shipments worldwide in the five year period through 2013, with Russia taking second place with 27 percent, according to the report published Monday by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
Germany came in third with 7 percent, followed by China (6 percent), which recently surpassed fifth-place France (5 percent).
The report noted the volume of Russian shipments has been tending to increase, despite economic difficulties. In particular, Indian weapons imports more than doubled in the past decade, with Russia supplying 75 percent of all arms sales to India in the past five years.

(37,427 posts)Not $. (Putin would like that.)
Russian arms are often cheaper. And, if you include the black market, even in $ they probably trump the US.
Putin says it's patriotic--remember, the root of the Russian word for "patriotism" is obvious to Russians, and is "fatherland"--to support the Russian arms industry. ("Pater" isn't of much use for most English-speakers in kenning the etymology of "patriotic," nor do we have the word "patria" as Russians have otechestvo < otets 'father').
Perhaps Americans should also be patriotic. Support Uncle MIC!
This is the kind of article that attracts no attention or condemnation for Russia on the part of some people until similarities with the US are pointed out. Immediately the US must be condemned, even if reflexively at even at the price of begrudging condemnation of Russia.

How many mirage jets are in the middle east? How many f16 and f15 jets are in the middle east? How many mig jets and hind helicopters are in the middle east? All support of that machinery should cease. When it breaks, it is broken and can be used no longer. If they want weaponry, let them make it themselves. We as a collective, meaning large highly developed countries, have made it far too easy for foreign powers to acquire weaponry.
