Denver enters border crisis debate by seeking to house children

Source: Denver Post

Denver is entering the debate over how to deal with a flood of more than 50,000 children from Central America who have been caught crossing the U.S. border with Mexico.

The city is considering seeking a three-year grant from the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement to house some of the children at its 54-bed Family Crisis Center. Not all beds are being used at the center, which temporarily houses youth awaiting a permanent placement through the Denver Department of Human Services.

If the city wins a grant, Mayor Michael Hancock says, it could be called upon to help resettle children who crossed over the border with family members in Colorado.

But at least two City Council members said they weren't aware of the grant application, which has been under way for weeks, until they saw news reports this week.

along with having humanitarian motives, also realize this will bring federal money to their state. It's a win/win and it's being on the right side of history, even if many think it's wrong.
