The man who shot the cellphone video showing a police officer using an apparent chokehold on a Staten Island man who later died, was arrested Saturday night on charges that he was carrying a stolen loaded handgun, a law-enforcement official said.
Ramsey Orta, 22 years old, was charged by the New York Police Department with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a weapon with a previous conviction, police said.
Alba Lekaj, 17, a woman Mr. Orta was with, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and marijuana possession.
Mr. Orta told the officers who were processing him that "you're only mad because I filmed your boy," the official said, insisting that police didn't make the connection until after the suspect made the statement.
The two were awaiting arraignment and couldn't be reached for comment. The arraignment isn't likely to occur before Monday. It was unclear whether either suspect has retained an attorney.
The law-enforcement official said Mr. Orta is known by a street name of "Sparks" and has a prior record going back to 2009, including criminal trespass, assault and drug possession.

(12,723 posts)So some cop sacrificed a throw-down gun huh. Cops need some new tricks. The Thin Blue line has to stop.

(2,975 posts)they were probably just waiting for the opportunity to bust him at random at a later date, it just made him a higher priority.

(44,577 posts)...(A) law-enforcement official said...Mr. Orta was arrested shortly after 10 p.m. after New York Police Department narcotics officers noticed him and Ms. Lekaj going into the Hotel Richmond, a known drug location...The two were seen by officers emerging from the hotel moments later, a standard sign used by officers to indicate that they may have been involved in a drug sale...
Well, it's nice to know that all that extra surveillance work paid off. And did they luck out by finding a gun on him, or were they tipped off by the seller?

(44,173 posts)it's also the ever-amorphous "weapons charges". And when you have really strict gun laws, you make it more possible for cops to harrass people for "weapons charges", whatever that means.
The stupidity of marijuana laws is so obvious as to not even require a comment.

(6,699 posts)Just saying. Convictions of marijuana use have ruined more than one life, and gotten more than one civilian off to a life of criminal record.

(30,058 posts)I will probably be watched very closely. It goes with the "give someone enough rope and they will hang themselves", don't help them find a "reason" to even stop me and tell me good morning.

(10,597 posts)... stay the fuck away from them. It's what I taught my sons too. Don't ever got to a party with someone. Drive your own car. If anything's going on that a police would not look kindly on, get the Hell out of there pronto.
Now, had I (or my sons) been the filmer, the police would have had a horrible time trying to find anything to arrest me for. I don't have a record. Not even a parking ticket. Guess they would just have to kill me.
The young couple did the right thing and hopefully that killer cop is going to be held accountable, irregardless of their past. Hope they get a good lawyer to defend them.
Frankly, I think every one of those cops should have been held accountable, for abetting.

(6,241 posts)I was at a 7-11 in Austin texas at age 17, getting a soda. Cop walked up to get a drink, I guess during a break. Being a friendly idiot, I said Hello. He glared at me and his hand went down to near his gun. I just backed off and left the place. It was that day I learned that cops are not your friend. Treat them as you would a wounded wild animal. Keep your distance, avoid at all cost.

(34,648 posts)I mean, they killed a guy for selling loosies. In front of him. No wonder he wanted a gun. Murdering cops, cops following you around after you witnessed them murdering a man, i wonder hiw they planted the gun and the weed. And if somebody says that cops have too much integrity to plant stuff, bullshit. They cover up their own crimes for each other and trump up charges on minorities whenerver they think it's necessary.
Cops are just another gang like crips or bloods or gangster disciples. They throw grenades in cribs to get to drugs that aren't there, make shit up, kill people, rape women, shoot kids in the back for having bb guns, beat up homeless folks, follow black people around, steal from civilians, harass pot heads while child molesters get to rack up the victim count, lie on the stand, the most racist people get hired, spray protesters with pepper spray, sock protesters in the head.
I'm done with cops until they start arresting bad cops. Police thy selves!!! It's going to turn into a situation where people just start ganging up on them wgenever they see a cop harassing people and there will come a point in time where they have to take their own inventory to see why they are despised more and more by society.
I was taught not to trust cops. There was good reason for it.
