Michelle Obama: ‘Women are smarter than men’

First Lady Michelle Obama engaged in a battle of the sexes Wednesday, claiming that women are more intelligent than their male counterparts.
We cant waste the spotlight. Time is short. Change is needed. And women are smarter than men, Obama said during the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit to a laughing audience, according to White House Press Pool reports.
She continued, And the men cant complain because they are outnumbered today.

White House Transcript, and further context:
And as a result, we have a responsibility to show them the way in whatever way we can. And that may be something as simple as embracing a child on the line and telling them that theyre beautiful and that youre proud of them, and that you know that theyre important and theyre valued. I think about that, because every time I meet a child I think, who knows whats going on in her life, whether she was just bullied or whether she had a bad day at school or whether she lost a parent -- that interaction that we have with that individual, that child for that moment, could change their life.
So we cant waste this spotlight. It is temporary and life is short, and change is needed. And women are smarter than men. (Laughter and applause.)

A man who takes this seriously probably really is less intelligent than most women.

(7,669 posts)that women are smarter than men but I do believe that they are less likely to overreact to aggression than men. Women have for centuries been told they were "less than" or even subordinate to males and still they continue to be the nurturers and heads of most families. I blame religion for these attitudes for the most part. I also think that more and more women are less likely to vote Republican these days than ever before. The GOP has gone too far with the anti-woman rhetoric and I think it will cost them dearly - at least I hope so.

EEO
(1,620 posts)You think facts change with position in culture and society, which is laughable. Your reasoning is highly flawed.
So an individual from an ethnic minority can call someone from the ethnic majority a racial slur, and in your world the person who has been offended has no right to complain.

In all seriousness, anyone who has worked in international development will have eventually concluded that when it comes to developing countries like those in Africa, women often are the key to any sort of economic progress. They tend to use their education and resources very effectively. Educate a woman and she will boost the local economy in many ways...in those developing countries.

(17 posts)Back in the seventies Germaine wrote a book in which she stated that the Y chromosome is a diminished X chromosome--so how can women not be the superior sex? Problem with Hillary is that even though she got famous on Bill's coattails, she's made it to her high place in a man's world (which it still is) so is largely playing men's games to succeed. But how we have progressed, even through her, from the valiant Geraldine Ferraro's replying to the press through clenched teeth. Men are physical stronger and suffer from hyper-testosterone. Am I repeating other posts? I am so pressed for time, if so, and apologize. Elizabeth Warren can't and shouldn't follow the Obama mold and run too soon, but isn't she doing it better?
I could go on, that Hillary would be better concentrating on women's issues, but I've said enough to agree with Michelle and of course, history, as elitist as it is, certainly offers us profiles of a few good men, Gandhi for instance, and . . . Mandela? Gandhi I'm sure about.
