Ukraine: Russian forces in major rebel cities

Source: AP-EXCITE

By JIM HEINTZ

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian military forces have been spotted in both major rebel-held cities in eastern Ukraine, an official said Tuesday, prompting Ukraine to declare that it now has to fight the Russian army, not just the separatists.

The statement on the Russians by Col. Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's National Security Council, came after the country's defense minister said Ukraine's armed forces are expanding their strategy from just fighting separatists to facing the Russian army in a war that could cost "tens of thousands" of lives.

Lysenko told reporters Russian troops had been seen in the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as other locations throughout the east. The claim could not be confirmed independently. Lysenko also said 15 servicemen had been killed over the previous day.

In Moscow, a Kremlin aide sharply criticized EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso for breaching confidentiality when he quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin as saying that Moscow could take over Kiev in two weeks if it wished.

And Olympics. He started his Crimea bullshit at the end of his doomed Sochi Olympics (that's one Olympics no one will want to remember, in the future) when NATO defense ministers were meeting. He feels that once he invades, he can't be pried loose, so he's hurrying before NATO meets and decides what to do. It's to give him more leverage.

And if he tries to get some balls and do it (in case he's actually crazy), they'll be kicked in, and hard. So now I'm curious, are you for Russian imperialism? Are you for the stronger countries taking over their weak neighbors? Is that a progressive/Democratic party viewpoint?

start striking targets there very soon. ISIS is a terrorist threat to the US, and we don't generally let borders get in our way of pursuing them.

Pres Obama has been careful to not do that because he knows that Russia has way more national interest at stake on its own borders than does the US. Europe seems to agree.

It seems as though it's mostly NATO bureaucrats and military weapons dealers who are fuming for war. Stephen Harper from Canada (alas my own PM), the right-wing mouth that roared, is about the only NATO political hothead calling for war, though by that, to be clear, he means war pursued by others, paid for by others, not by us.

In an interview with Deutsche Wirtschaftsnachrichten published on September 1, Roland Bless, spokesperson of the current OSCE Chairmanship holder Switzerland said:

"The OSCE have not found any evidence of Russian troop presence on Ukrainian soil."

The organization is now with 250 employees in the region and can clearly observe somewhat freely.
