Princeton worker told to choose medical pot or job

PRINCETON, N.J. (AP) A Princeton University employee and marijuana legalization activist said Tuesday he has been told by his employer to choose between medical marijuana and his job.
Don DeZarn, 48, of East Windsor, said Princeton officials told him that he could not work in his job as senior operations manager of campus dining and use medical marijuana. DeZarn said he hasn't used medical marijuana while working, but had let university officials know about it if he ever needed to use it for an "emergency situation."
The U.S. Navy veteran said he is prescribed medical marijuana for inflammatory bowel disease and post-traumatic stress disorder. DeZarn said the "ultimatum" comes as a surprise to him. He is running as a New Jersey congressional candidate for the Legalize Marijuana Party.
"I haven't hid from that issue," he said. "I consider myself an activist."
A Princeton spokesman said the university doesn't comment on personnel matters.

It sure sounds like he's being singled out because of his choice of medication. Isn't medical herb legal in Jersey?

(15,189 posts)If they won't hire you for pot use, you should be able to get SDI till things change. Once EVERYONE is using marijuana, I think things would change.

(9,808 posts)Not everyone wants to use, or is physically able to, or has a need or interest. I'm a major advocate for full legalization, because I can now legally have an epi-pen in case I encounter it. Before, I had to hope I wouldn't go into full anaphylaxis because, since I am allergic to a (formerly) illegal substance, I never should have come into contact with it.
And just because legal doesn't mean everyone wants to use. A lot of people don't drink alcohol or smoke tobacco or both. Why should pot be different?

If cannabis cures IBS as well as it handles post-surgical pain/nausea - sign me up yesterday. (I used it while in recovery, but with all of the senna they give you to offset pain meds, no telling if it made a difference. Needs to have a standalone trial run)
