Jury reaches verdict in McDonnell corruption trial (former Virginia GOP Gov)

Source: Washington Post

After 17 and a half hours of deliberations, the jurors in the McDonnell trial have reached a verdict.

The verdict is expected to be read in court shortly. The decision will bring to a close a trial that seemed to grip the nation since it began in July with the shocking revelation by defense attorneys that the McDonnells’ marriage was shattered, and that would be a core element of their attempt to beat the charges.

The only counts for which he was acquitted was ...
Count 12: False statement to Townebank on 10/03/2012; and Count 13: False statement to PenFed on 02/01/2013

McDonnell was found guilty on the first 11--the most serious charges!

Each count can carry up to a 20-year sentence. The mandatory minimum for each count is 1 to 2 years. So McDonnell is looking a minimum of 11-22. He better hope the judge is in a good mood on sentencing day.

On Edit:

I'm going to bet the prosecutors will ask for some very heavy time to set an example for other crooked politicians to see.

On Edit 2:

McDonnell is 60. He could be looking at what is, effectively, a life sentence.

19. Wire Fraud

I knew that he was going down when they proved that he lied on his loan application. That is loan fraud and once he received the money via a check or wire it became wire fraud. The next guy to go down is the President of Town Bank in Virginia Beach because he approved some of these loans. As a Virginian I am very sad that a former Governor has disgraced the Commonwealth in such a manor. However it does restore my faith in the Department of Justice ability to prosecute a political case without a hint of partisan politics. McDonnell and his wife get what they deserve and no amount of praying was going to change that.

They disgraced the Commonwealth, a crime punishable by death if the old guard had their way. As a Virginian, I applaud that jury. Hopefully, sentencing will fit the crime and they won't get off with a slap on the hand.

Local TX media is taking the Perry case a lot more seriously than the national media. Perry is actually in a lot more hot water than people realize.
