Delaware Governor Apologizes for 'Inappropriate' Twitter Photo

Source: Wall St Journal

Delaware Gov. Jack Markell apologized on Thursday for posting what he called an "inappropriate photo" on his office's Twitter account, a miscue that an aide blamed on her clumsy typing.

The photo of a woman in a provocative pose and wearing a leather outfit was taken down shortly after it was posted. The tweet should have contained a link to a photo of a news conference Thursday at which Mr. Markell, a Democrat, announced new funding for the state's six lowest-performing district schools.

The governor's office apologized "to anyone who was offended."

Mr. Markell's office later issued a statement saying the picture has been on the Internet for years. Spokeswoman Kelly Bachman said she caused the errant post while uploading a picture of the event to Hootsuite, a third-party social media application. During the upload she continued typing, mistakenly altering the automatically generated Internet link for the event photo, she said. When she deleted the letters she had added, she also deleted a portion of the link itself, she said.

First off, there was nothing inherently offensive about the picture.

Secondly, it was the consequence of someone accidentally deleting letters from the URL.

IMHO, anyone "offended" by the consequence of someone who was (a) not even the politician and who (b) made a mechanical error, is indeed the problem.

The "phony apology" matters when a politician says or does something inadvertently revealing of their actual thoughts and then uses the "anyone offended" line. Either you do not understand what happened here, or have some odd notion of fault.

The URL got shortened and it linked to someone else's photo. He had nothing to do with the photo.

They fucked up the URL. Seriously, Anthony Weiner was one thing, but you can't even give Markell the benefit of the doubt here?
